Fixed... I think
Mar. 7th, 2004 11:58 pmI took my computer over to Mike and Gene's today. Mike played with it and I think we finally nailed the bug that I had.
One thing that Mike did was run a "custom" search with AdAware instead of the basic search. Using his own parameters the program was able to locate six things that it hadn't flagged before.
These, however, were not the problem.
After a bit more experimenting, Mike went and turned off any startup process that wasn't familiar. I only just realized that one of them was Winzip, but that's cool because I didn't want or need it running on startup. Anyway I also have Winrar, which I like better.
After this he checked out my Windows System folder. Every pass Spykiller would identify a program named "Cydoor" which was in "AdCache" in my Windows System folder. Spykiller said it was dangerous but could apparently not delete it. Turns out it was hidden (I didn't have show all files turned on) and was set to read-only, which I guess prevented it from being deleted by Spykiller... but once revealed it was easy to remove.
That may well have been my problem... haven't seen any signs of random popups since (in limited tests so far). Either that or one of the several unknown processes that we turned off nailed it. All hail Mike! As he says, he proved once again that he has the bigger club!
From Spykiller's web site:
It says it has cleaned the spyware, but on rescanning (without connection to the web) the parasites (your products words) are still there?
Answer:
Those remained entries are only the shorcut keys of the removed spyware or just support files for Cydoor and such html, gif, swf files that were not essential in removing the SpyWare -- just extra trash left behind. Once the main spyware files removed, they have no effect on your computer.
Saturday Jeff called. He and Jeri-Lynn wanted to take me to Frye's to prove that it really exists. So around 3:30 pm they dropped by and we met Julie and Mike at a place that (as far as I could tell) was called Frye's.
I bought a $9.99 am/fm radio. It's very small and blue. It's designed to hang around your neck and comes with headphones, and probably works better than the one I've been using at work.
I also bought a dvd -- Card Captor Sakura Movie 2, which ends the series.
Somewhere around that time the Huskies knocked off the Stanford Carinal in men's basketball. #1 ranked, undefeated Stanford mind you. I had been thinking the game was at 6 pm and had figured if we weren't out too long I might actually get back home in time to watch it, but I was confused... it was at 6 pm EAST COAST TIME. But as it happened we wandered into the tv department at Frye's just as the final seconds were winding down. It took me a few seconds to realize what the score was, and how much time was left, and then suddenly it was over and people were running onto the court, and we were thinking, you know, let's not take the 520 bridge back home, that would be stupid. Let's avoid the University District altogether.
But as it turned out we had nothing to worry about because we didn't head directly home. We went to Julie and Mike's place. Their dog and one of their two cats begged for attention most of the night. They ordered Chinese food and we watched Shrek, which Jeri-Lynn had never seen. Then we watched a lot of the special extras. Then Julie popped in another movie, Treasure Planet, which was good if not completely scientifically accurate. Then we watched a few of the specials on that dvd.
I really hadn't expected Jeff and Jeri-Lynn to want to watch two movies but it turns out they had no idea what time it was. Anyway we got home and I hid my CCS movie from Tom because I didn't need to watch anything else that night. But I played Toontown until nearly six am.
Sunday Mike (the other one -- Gene's Mike) called and offered to try and fix my computer problem (details above). Anyway first I visited Silver Platters to pick up a new Toy Dolls cd. I've been listening to my Toy Dolls cds for the last two weeks and decided that I needed another... there are a couple that I still don't have.
Then I hit my comic shop.
Then I visited Gene and Mike. While there Gene insisted that I watch League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, since I hadn't seen it yet. It was... well, not bad for the first half. Once they get to Venice the movie spins out of control and stupid thing is piled on top of stupid thing.
But anyway, my computer was fixed and I headed home. I stopped at QFC for some food and stuff and I noticed a supply of dvds for $9.99. I recognized one title that Tom had recently bought (Quigly Down Under) and several titles that Julie and Mike had in their collection (Much Ado About Nothing, Nicholas Nickelby, etc.) So now I know where my friends have been recently, hehe. I picked up Much Ado myself, since I'm theoretically building a collection of Shakespeare on video and I like the work Kenneth Braunaugh has done.
When I got home I popped in the Card Captor Sakura movie and Tom and I watched it. And then he went to the store and while there bought another of their cheap dvds... A Fish Called Wanda. Well, since he put that in when he got home I had to watch it too. ^_^
So... five movies in two days. That's enough for one weekend I think!
