miko2One of the things I watched while I was at my parent's house over Thanksgiving was a VH1 countdown of the 40 worst metal songs ever. It was wonderful video entertainment of no value whatsoever. For each group they'd play a portion of the video for the song in question and have commentary from hard rock/metal people who were apparently a lot more "hip" than those being made fun of. For example, commentary from Henry Rollins or members of the Donnas. And the commentary usually ran along the lines of "You can't sing about feelings in metal! Metal is about sex, drugs, and rock and roll!" Or "This doesn't even qualify as double entendre. It's single entendre."
I have my own opinion of what is the worst metal song in the history of metal, and it happens to be one of those "single entendre" songs. It's "Cherry Pie" by Warrant. That song came out at the height of the 80's hair band pop metal boom, and I couldn't stand it from the first time I heard it. So I was very curious to see if they placed it on their list.
It came in at #2. Boy, did that make me happy. ^_^ I felt justified for all of the years I've despised that song.
Their #1 worst metal song ever was "Final Countdown" by Europe. I wouldn't have even considered that a metal song, to me it's more in line with Journey or Styx or Survivor. Of course, one of their criticisms was that it "wasn't a real metal song". Well, duh. Their other criticisms included that it was repetetive, that the synthesizer riff could get stuck in your head for days and days, and that it was impossible to figure out what they were really singing about. I'd agree with all of those points, and yet, I always kind of liked that song. ^_^ Worst metal song ever? I don't think so.
Most of the other songs they had on their list were pretty awful though. ^_^
