making a few cds shouldn't be this hard
Apr. 19th, 2002 02:02 pmThis is about my stupid computer.
First, I hooked up my printer last week and installed the driver for it. Now, when I boot, I get a message that my dvd irq is in conflict with the pci irq, and it won't load the driver.
Anyway -- I want to make a better version of my Pirate cd, and make some copies for my friends, right? I've been using a program that came with my cd burner, HP cd copy or something like that. Well, it's fine for what it does. I can make a music cd from other cds, or I can make a music cd from files on my computer. What I apparently can't do is make a music cd from both sources, or rip songs from a cd and transfer them to files on my computer. Doh!
I have an out-of-date copy of Music Match Jukebox. It can rip songs, except when I try it it keeps telling me that "a recording is already in progress". Nani? Anyway I remember now that it only works with mp3 files, and you get better sound from wav files.
So I go online and download a freeware cd ripper. This works for a few songs, but then it chokes on a certain cd and freezes up. What's more, it tries to take down my entire system, and on the third attempt it succeeds and everything reboots. What a crappy piece of software!
So I download another cd ripper, this one a top-rated shareware version. It works for a few songs, then starts to choke and freeze up also. At this point, there seems to be some conflict between my cd-r drive and my dvd drive. Anyway, the program decides that my cd-r drive (where I've been ripping songs from) no longer exists.
So I start ripping from the dvd drive. After more reboots and futzing around, I finally get all of my songs converted to computer files. I can now finally use my hp cd-copy program to make my cds from files on my computer.
Only it turns out that for some reason, after making one cd, I can never click on "make another copy". The program ALWAYS finds an error on the cd-r I've put in, and tells me that it's too fast for the drive, or there's an error on it. BUT. If I close the program, open it, and re-select all of my songs to make a new cd, it's happy again.
So basically, every program I have for making cd copies is in some way a piece of !@#$!@#$.
