Feb. 14th, 2005 04:02 amJack L. Chalker died on Friday. Probably not something you'd see in the news. Back in High School I read his Wellworld books and I became a big fan of his... later on that kinda wore off, although I still picked up his books as they came out. He had a big imagination and came up with some very unusual stuff, but I always felt that he was stronger on the big ideas and big plots than he was in the details and execution... especially in some of his later books, he fell more and more often into a "tell don't show" style of writing... it seemed he got sloppier rather than improving, as good writers do.
He was a long time fixture not only in Science Fiction but in the fandom as well. It was really interesting to hear him talk at Norwescon a few years back. But even then, he didn't look like the healthiest man in the world to me.
Ah well. Despite everything I was hoping that one day he'd do yet another Well World book, but now that will never happen. Rest in peace.
Picked up a lot of comics over the weekend... Tuxedo Gin, Tom Strong, Ceres Celestial Legend, Blue Monday vol 3, Ranma 1/2, Shadow Star... more Fruits Basket.
Tuxedo Gin is one of the funniest things I've read in the last few months... I don't think I've lent that one to Sky yet but I should. Blue Monday is brilliant. Tom Strong, I didn't like it so much at first but I like it quite a bit now, it's developed really well. Which doesn't mean I don't wish Moore would go back and do more Top Ten.
Last week among other things I picked up a brand new Grimjack story, along with the first trade paperback collecting the original stories. Grimjack is back, all is right with the world!
