I haven't played City of Heroes in two weeks, but within the last week I was invited to the City of Villians Beta. When I came home on Friday I decided to try and set that up. This involved logging into my PlayNC account, creating a new game account for the game City of Villians (entering the game code they had sent me and coming up with a game account and password for the new game), then creating a message board profile for my new CoV account (and... this part bugs me... my board name needed a password too... but you never use your board name to log in to anything, you use your game account name... so tell me why the board name requires a password?). After that you need to make sure you have City of Heroes Test installed, then you need to get the CoV updater on your computer and run that...

After all of that, I couldn't log in. A visit to the message boards revealed that at the moment they are only testing from 6-8 pm PST, Monday through Friday. Sigh!

But the good news -- if you can call it that -- is that next week is my jury duty, and so I might get a chance to log in and take a peek at what CoV has to offer so far.

In the meantime Tom sat down next to me with his own CoV invite and tried to work through the same things I was trying to work through. I had a few problems before I got it all worked out, and I would have helped him after I'd figured it out if he had waited, but by the time I was done he was mired in a big mess. He'd created his account and board profle as nearly as I can tell, but wasn't able to log in. His solution to this was to reset his password over and over and over, to the point where I wasn't really sure WHY he couldn't log in... he'd also used the same name and password for his CoV account as for his CoH account. Anyway I told him to forget that part, and I set up a CoH Test folder on his computer and a CoH Test shortcut on his desktop, but when we tried to run it it wouldn't work. I think that was just that Test was down at the time... but Tom was getting upset.

So today he tries everything again, then keeps trying different things until somehow he apparently uninstalled his net card driver, or something. I couldn't figure it out, and it's frustrating trying to help him because he keeps clicking on things and trying different things to "fix" the problem. He even tried to run some sort of Windows repair program. Then he gets upset and slams things around. Well, I've been known to do that too actually. ^_^ But it never helps, it just means that he almost broke his keyboard tray on his desk.

Anyway, the good news is that he called his ex girlfriend and she was able to figure out the problem and get him to reinstall the right driver. And as it turns out it might have been a Microsoft Windows update that uninstalled it for him... not his fault after all.

In the meantime last night I decided to log in to Second Life, and I ran around spending some of the money I've accumulated in the last several months (since I haven't played in like forever). For me the game is largely a dress-up game, so here's my avatar dressed up in an "Elegant Gothic Lolita" cranberry dress with fuzzy stompy boots:

Meh. Between everything else, I didn't really have time to write last night or this morning. I went out and got my car's tire fixed, hit the comic shop, came home, got ready... and drove over to Gene's place. Then I remembered that writer's night was out at Edd & Amy's place. I didn't have directions, I didn't have enough gas, I didn't have any cash to buy gas. I drove back home, stopped at the store on the way to get some groceries and money... but but the time I got home it was after 8:00 pm. I didn't have anything to read anyway and I'd forgotten to get any food to bring... so I just decided to skip the whole thing. Not worth the trouble really.
