Busy weekend
Saturday was Steam Punk game day. I was about an hour late, pretty normal for me. I managed to hit my comic shop on the way over and stop to get some food (burrito from Taco Del Mar, snack stuff from Ballard Market). That's most of why I was late.
jwyldragon came just to watch. I think she had a good time, although our gaming group is so huge that things move pretty slow.
The game was fun, went to 2 am.
Sunday I joined
miertam,
sora_kitsune,
jeffreycornish, and
virusfox on a bike trip.
(Note: Hmmm. I just realized that the reason I've missed things that Virusfox has posted is because I don't have him listed as my friend. Doh!)
So I was late to
genebreshears and Mike's (Miertam's) house, although not very late -- we went to a bike shop so Mike could buy an air pump, and I bought a bike helmet that fit me (my head is very large!) and some gloves -- we stopped to get gas -- we stopped to pick up Virusfox -- we stopped to get Sky's bike from where he works -- we also met Jeff there -- then I rode in Jeff's car, and we got to stop for gas again -- ANYWAY, after much running around we drove up to the Snoqualmie Tunnel (or was it Ironhead? The sign I saw said it was the Snoqualmie Tunnel). I was riding Jeri-Lynn's bike (Jeff's wife) while Virus had Gene's bike (Gene had laundry to do, and wanted to have a day off to himself to do stuff).
The tunnel in question is a long train tunnel through a mountain. The tracks are no longer there, and it's part of a long bike/hiking trail now. It's VERY dark, cold, and wet, but strangely you can see the light at the far side of the tunnel right after entering. I think it's about a mile long.
I had trouble at first -- this is my first time riding a bike probably since I was in high school, so that's 20 years ago. It was very dark, my little bike light was pointed up so I couldn't see what was right in front of me, and I kept getting too close to the tunnel wall, which was a problem because the gravel there was deeper and it was hard to turn away once I started heading to the wall. I ran into the wall three times, not very hard though. By the third sort-of crash, I was very tired, so I stopped and rested for a good 5 or 10 minutes, then rode to the end of the tunnel.
Jeff had a little trouble too -- he'd left Jeri-Lynn's bike light behind, so he let me have his, while he was using a light taped to the steering wheel with duck tape. Much harder to adjust to point where you want it too. But beyond that, he got a little ways into the tunnel before he realized that the reason it was so dark was that he hadn't removed his sunglasses. ^_^
Anyway, there were some picnic tables at the other end of the tunnel, and a small stream cascading down the mountainside. It was very peaceful. I realized that the bike trip had just started, but I didn't think I could continue, so I let everyone else go on and I just sat at the table, ate a sandwich, drank my powerade, and then played bejeweled for a while (Mike left his spare brain behind to keep me entertained).
The others rode about three miles further, most of it downhill. Mike got back much earlier than anyone else, then Sky (Sora) showed up a while later. Jeff and Chris (Virus) had to stop for some quick repairs, and rolled in a good while later.
Finally we headed back through the tunnel. I did much better on the way back, didn't have to stop or crash into anything. In fact, when we got back to the car I was feeling pretty good, while everyone else was pretty much wiped out from their much longer ride.
We packed up, said goodbye to Jeff, and drove back to Gene and Mike's place. Then we had a very good Chinese dinner, and hung out for a little while later before heading home.
All in all, a much busier weekend than usual. ^_^
