miko2Sunday evening I sat down with the intent of watching "Batman Returns" with the commentary track on, or maybe go through all of the special extra features to see what's interesting. I was very surprised, therefore, to discover that the DVD contained absolutely NO special features of any kind. Oh, there was a single movie trailer, and I could watch the movie in French, with subtitles in French, English, or Spanish.
That was it. Who, in this day and age, puts out a major motion picture of any kind on DVD with NO SPECIAL FEATURES?
This is what, in the parlance of the industry, is known as "lame".
So I decided that, damn them, if it's my only "special features" option, then I am bloody well going to watch Batman Returns in French with English subtitles!
And I did. Proving nothing, really, except that from what I could tell the French dub was pretty well done.
Today I got up early and decided that I wanted to watch some anime, something short, maybe an hour long. I decided to watch Amazing Nurse Nanako. This is something I recieved for a gift a while back, and, no offense to anyone who might have gifted it to me, but it's not really something I would ever have bought on my own. Which I guess in that case it was a safe bet to buy for me because I was pretty certain to not already have it. Anyway, I knew ahead of time that it was a bouncy-boobs and panty-shot fan service type of anime, but there was always hope that the characters or plot would be interesting.
Unfortunately, my hopes were crushed like a jelly-filled donut beneath the wheels of a semi truck. The characters are not interesting -- they are not even fleshed out enough to qualify as one-dimensional. The main character Nanako has no redeeming features, aside from her gravity-defying breasts. She whines and cries, her breasts bounce, she breaks stuff and falls down and exposes her panties. When this happened in the first scene, I was annoyed and wondered why they didn't take the time to give us a better introduction to who she was and what her personality was like. I soon learned that they HAD done those things -- whining, crying, bouncing, breaking things, falling down, and exposing herself encompasses her ENTIRE personality. Once you get those things down, you know everything there is to know about her.
But the plots were even more special. They involved the pentagon and the vatican, and the man Nanako works for, a brilliant scientist who likes to abuse her for no apparent reason other than he's an ass and I guess it's supposed to tittlate the viewers. There's also a short, ugly old Chinese doctor of some sort, and a short, ugly old witch who was only on screen for about 30 seconds, so I know nothing at all about her, other than she screams and has no real personality, something she has in common with all of the other characters. But anyway... the plots. They were vague and mysterious and confusing and not fleshed out enough for you to really know what was going on, or why. But that makes sense, because the only thing that was really going on in this anime was that Nanako was bouncing her breasts and then falling down, and as for why, it was so we could see her panties again.
Well, I can't necessarily say it's the worst anime I've seen... oh what the heck, yes I can. It's the worst I've ever seen. Period.
