miko2: Ranma disguised as a schoolgirl to fool Ryoga (mikoraccoon)
I remember that when I first heard of Killbilly, that "Hillbilly Punk" was a new, semi-popular thing, and that there were other bands around doing similar things. I've always meant to track down some similar artists, so tonight I took a stab at it on the internet.

First, using Amazon.com, I clicked links from the Killbilly page and found two "alternative country" groups, Whiskeytown and Uncle Tupelo. I've known about Uncle Tupelo for years, but I don't know if either band is really what I'm looking for.

Next I entered "hillbilly punk" in a Google search. I started getting hits for bands with names like Hard Rock Miners, Lords of the Highway (they're on the "Psychobilly Web Ring"!), The Hickoids, Rexway, One Dog's Opinion, Pistol Whippers, Strawberry, Scroat Belly, Chicken (CD: "The Other White Album") ^_^, Mad Trucker Gone Mad and Nine Pound Hammer.

I think a lot of these bands are more punk than country or bluegrass. Maybe I was looking for Whiskytown and Uncle Tupelo after all?

One thing I realized right away, most of these bands were too obscure to be found at a site like Amazon.com. This is a type of music that is still mostly underground, so you're going to be buying CDs directly from the band. So it's not surprising that someone has a website to keep you up-to-date on weird-ass country punk/metal bluegrass, titled (appropriately enough) The Redneck Underground.

Some of the bands they list are more rockabilly... y'know, Reverend Horton Heat fits into this category of music, more or less.

I also found Hayseed Dixie's Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC. Sounds like fun. ^_^ I might have to buy it.

I found these reviews of one former punk's favorite country cds. I must admit, I list them here mostly as a way of writing them down so I can read more about them later. ^_^

Neko Case & Her Boyfriends - Furnace Room Lullaby
Beautiful singer... great live show.

Huevos Rancheros - Endsville
Kick butt... racing down a country road... surf country.

Jason and the Scorchers - Lost And Found
One of the first bands to straddle the line between punk and country (other than Johnny Cash)

The Knitters - Poor Little Critter on the Road
Made up of members of X and The Blasters... countrybilly.

Meat Puppets - Up On the Sun
See entry for Jason and the Scorchers

Meat Purveyors - More Songs About Buildings and Cows
Speed-grass... available on Bloodshot Records, a label that has yet to let me down.

Old 97's - Wreck Your Life
Come across like a broken-hearted garage band from Texas... which they might very well be.

Split Lip Rayfield - Never Make It Home
Formerly the country-metal band "Scroatbelly", they traded in their electric guitars for mandolins. Currently my favorite album.

Supersuckers - Must Have Been High
These guys are usually a heavy punk-type group... then they recorded this straight ahead country album that caught the ear of Steve Earle, and myself (which proves great minds think alike).

Uncle Tupelo - Still Feel Gone
Great album that saves me having to use up two places on this list for "Son Volt" and "Wilco"

Without question there is more music in the world than I will ever be able to listen to. ^_^ But research like this comes in handy for me when bargain shopping... I'm likely to find one of these bands in a bargain-bin in the next year or so. That's how I bought my Killbilly CD, after all! $1.00 at Half Price Books! ^_^
