I'm a product of American consumerism, and so my life revolves around the things that I buy that I don't need.

Monday I bought "No" by They Might Be Giants. It's a fun "all ages" cd, more like children's songs than ever before. By Friday I had assembled a "greatest hits" TMBG cd and made copies for three people at work who had never heard of such a band.

Tuesday I bought a massive book of Everquest maps as well as their new expansion, Planes of Power (which came out Monday). The expansion comes with a little soft resin model of Firiona Vie, their half-naked mascot elf chick. It's actually pretty well made. ^_^ As for Planes of Power, I wasn't going to buy it except that two of the planes are accessible to anyone and don't include all-powerful demi-gods who can kill you by looking at you. This in itself wasn't a big incentive, as you can't hunt anything in these two peaceful planes (Plane of Knowledge and Plane of Tranquility), but the BIG advantage is that you can access the Plane of Knowledge from just about any city in the world nearly instantaneously, and then port to another part of the world equally instantaneously. Everquest has for years resisted making travel easy for all classes, but this finally does it: every city in the old world has a portal in a nearby "newbie" zone (ie a place safe for all people to port into, even if they aren't welcome in the city). There are three ports to Kunark, one to Velious, and Two to Luclin. Which probably means nothing to most of you but trust me it's cool.

As for the map book thing, the maps are not gridded or as detailed as player-made maps, but they're all in one handy book so it's pretty useful too.

I probably bought stuff on Wednesday and Thursday too, but I can't remember what. On Friday I hit my comic shop and picked up Love Hina vol 5 (dvd) and for comics I got the latest graphic novel volumes of Celestial Zone, Parasyte, Kodacha and Marmalade Boy. Cool, some of my favorite things!

Saturday I bought sezchuan spicy chicken and barbeque pork from Chef at Wok. Tom came over and we watched anime -- Love Hina, Maze, and GTO.

Sunday I bought a book at Elliot Bay Book Co. and then I bought more manga at Kinokuniya -- Paradise Kiss 2 and 3, Cowboy Bebop 2, and a volume of a Japanese only manga I collect. There was more stuff there that I wanted -- more Cowboy Bebop, Mars, all kinds of manga. I can't afford to follow all the manga I like anymore, there's too much stuff coming out in English. Ditto for anime on dvd.

So that's my consumerism for one week. I keep reminding myself that I'm poor (trying to catch up from Conifur still) and can't spend too much. Mostly this means I think about it a lot and feel guilty when I buy stuff -- but I still buy stuff. ^_^

I guess the head cheese has all the good answers.

Oh yes

In keeping with that Halloween spirit of unimaginable horror, one of Sky's favorite comics, "Guardian Angel", is now available in English.

(In case Sky doesn't recognize the English title -- this is Shugo Getten, that ultra-cute manga with the very heavy Ah! Megamisama influences).

And what's so horrible about that, you ask? Bwahahahahaha! I'm so glad you asked!

It's being put out by Raijin Comics in a monthly manga magazine with three other titles, none of which are particularly cute or shoujo. In fact, they're all heavily shounen. One of them is City Hunter, not too bad a choice. One is "Baki the Grappler", some sort of story of an ugly muscle-bound wrestler and all the fights he gets into. Woo.

And if that weren't enough, the THIRD title is "Fist of the Blue Sky" which is -- yes, just what you've always wanted! -- a "Fist of the North Star" prequel! In comic form! In the same magazine as Guardian Angel!

Boy, what a great combination!

But maybe they'll eventually do graphic novel collections....
