I haven't thought about doing nanowrimo this year, although I've thought a lot about writing. I haven't actually written anything for several days though. I blame that my bedroom computer was down, although really I could have pulled any story except the two tai-pan stories I was most recently working on from my laptop.

Today was a bit of a cleanup day, at least for a little while. I tried to clean up part of my bedroom. I even dug through my closet a little and threw out some old shirts and pants. The funny thing is, I haven't worn anything hanging in my closet for 4 to 5 years. I hang most of my tee shirts in the closet out in the hallway, and my jeans and other stuff I put in my dresser or lay on the pile of clothing and stuff under my bed, or I just leave in the laundry basket until I use it again. So realistically I could throw just about everything in the closet away and not really notice. I didn't take the time to do that sort of thing, but at least I got rid of some of it. But I found two or three pairs of jeans that are in better shape than some of the ones I've been wearing, and they still fit so I wore one pair today.

Anyway I was expecting Jeff to come over and help me with my computer, but when he called he was with Mike and they were down at Southcenter on their way. They'd been to visit Mike (the other Mike -- Julie's Mike as opposed to Gene's Mike ^_^) and had been to Fry's and generally got a lot of computer junk. So I had time to vacuum my room a little, hop in the shower, and open the door just as they arrived, my hair still wet.

Trust me, hair down to your waist remains wet for quite a while.

And then they went back and worked on my computer, which mostly involved verifying that it was hosed and reinstalling windows. Yay! Now I have access to my important files again.

While Windoze did its thing we talked and Jeff and Mike kept picking up things that were lying around, which was kind of scary because some of that stuff has been lying there for at least ten years. You can tell by the dust. Jeff found a punch thingy that was made to punch holes in 5 1/4 floppy discs so that you could use both sides. Don't ask me why I still own such a thing.

After that Jeff went off to visit relatives, while Mike hung around until Kristin and Valentine showed up to drop off a used scanner for me. Not sure where I'm going to put it, but I could use a scanner. Mine is still broken... not fatally broken, but broken beyond my willpower to fix it. Basically the glass has fallen in, and I fixed it once before, and I'm resigned to the fact that it's a crummy design flaw and I should have a different scanner. Although the one Kristin gave me isn't perfect either, or she would have kept it. ^_^

Kristin and Valentine headed to Gene's place, (you know, where Mike lives too), and I took Mike there. When we got there they were standing outside in the cold because Gene wasn't home (and the neighbor's cat, whose name suddenly escapes me, wanted in too). So we went inside, and the rest of the evening was spent with Mike building a computer from the parts he'd bought (to be sent to his brother), making a chicken vegetable soup that was very good, Valentine building stuff with leggos and playing ball, the cat causing problems, etc. Gene got home and we brought in lots of groceries, some of which went into the soup. He had a lot of movies that he'd bought. Much later after Kristin and Valentine left, I stayed to watch some Bugs Bunny cartoons and then Raiders of the Lost Ark.

That was pretty much my Saturday. After coming home I remember that I had some sheets in the wash, and threw them in the dryer.

I also played with the laptop computer that I offered free to whoever (Chuck was interested in it). It's a 486, so it's not much... loaded with Windows 3.1, Word, a Spreadsheet, a few other things. Very slow, and the battery appears dead. But otherwise it works. Valentine and I played some minesweeper on it.

I haven't written anything today.

Jeff called around 1 or 2 pm. Jeri-Lynn is gone until Thursday so he'd said he might call. I didn't really have anything planned, but I wanted to get a keyboard for Tom's old 2nd computer that I've been playing around with. So Jeff came by, and we drove up to Lynnwood to PC Club, where I bought a cheap $10 keyboard that is all black so it looks cool, and a cheap $8 optical mouse that was all black with a light-up wheel, and a cheap network card and a cable.

I've bought cheap network cards before and it's not usually a good idea, but it didn't stop me from making the same mistake again.

We came back to my place and watched some anime. I didn't have Read or Die (Gene and Mike still have it) but I had the newer Spirit of Wonder series that Jeff hadn't seen yet. Fun stuff.

When that was done I plugged my mouse and keyboard into Tom's 2nd computer and got it to boot up. Then I installed the net card. Then Jeff tried to get it to recognize the net card. Then we moved the net card to a different slot. Then it finally saw the net card, and after more work it was able to see other computers on the net. Then Jeff did some updates and that sort of thing. Then it couldn't find the hard drive, so we checked the cable connection, and then it was happy and could see it again.

While all of this was going on I did things on my other computers in the room... I played around on Tom's computer, ran virus scan and AdAware scan, removed Yahoo Instant Messenger which he'd complained about constantly (he didn't remember installing it in the first place), and then ran scans on my own (main) computer. My Linux system which I rarely do anything with (in part because it's not fully in communcation with my network) had been shut down since I lost power a week or two ago, so I tried turning it on. I didn't realize right away that the software disk was in the drive, so I wound up installing Linux again, and this eventually hosed the system so that it won't boot up. Oy vey! Well I wasn't doing much with it anyway, but it bugs me when I have a computer that isn't working. ^_^

Speaking of which... after Jeff left I discovered that the computer now known on the network as "Piecesof8" (because it's Tom's computer but I'm hijacking it since he has no use for it) had tried to reboot. Every time it reboots it encounters an error and you have to hit F1 to make it continue. Well, once again it can't find the hard drive. I don't think it's a loose cable after all, I think the hard drive is about to die. So maybe all my work on this silly computer was a waste of time after all. Too bad too, I wanted to play around on a Win 2k machine a little and learn more about that platform.

Oh well, that leave me with two computers that don't work at the moment, although I'm suspicious that Piecesof8 will boot up just fine if I leave it sit for a while... then will stop working again after running for a while.

The important thing is that my main computers work just fine so I can work on my stories again.
