1. Oil Change for the Hyundai that I don't own: will have to do this tomorrow.
2. Call my insurance company: left a message.
3. Call North End Auto and find out what they did with my car: need to look up their number first.
4. Fix my sick computer: possibly hopefully fixed now.
I had noticed AdAware searching a suspicious-sounding file folder called WebRebates found in my Programs folder. I checked it out. It claimed to track my computer/web usage to help me find rebates that I might have missed. Oh, how helpful.
I deleted it. I emptied the trash bin. It couldn't be deleted, and reinstalled itself.
I called
miertam. He told me the obvious... that I should try shutting down this program (or anything else that looked suspicious) from running processes and then delete it again. He also said he'd sent me a useful AdAware plugin that could nail a particularly nasty type of Adware, which might be what I had.
I hadn't checked my e-mail. I'd disconnected this computer from the network, and this is my "e-mail" computer. I don't like to have e-mail in multiple places.
I was able to delete WebRebates and empty the trash. I rebooted and tried Mike's plugin, and it found nothing.
I checked for other suspicious folders, and came across something called WindowsAd or something of that sort. It very straightforwardly said that it was there to provide me with helpful popup ads for things I might want to buy, and that I'd downloaded it from some website online. This also required me to kill a running process before deleting it, but delete it I did.
I'm running more scans now, but I think I may have got everything.
Edit: Or possibly not. Spykiller found something new, and it isn't even done scanning.
