Nov. 4th, 2004 11:50 amThe other day I woke up and for some reason I had an idea to order a Japanese jacket.
There's a type of loose Japanese jacket that you see often in anime shows, which is padded with cotton batting for warmth. That suddenly sounded like a great idea, something to lounge around in that was really warm. I'd been to a web site a year ago that sold them, but I didn't have it bookmarked, and I didn't remember what they were called.
A little searching using words like Kimono and Yukata brought me to pages where I could buy a happi coat, which originated as an overcoat to be worn over a kimono or as a jacket worn by shopkeepers, but is now just a short jacket that is worn as a robe or is especially popular at festivals.
These Happi coats were close to what I was thinking of, but they weren't specifically designed to keep you warm in the winter. Eventually I found the page that I'd remembered seeing a year ago, but after searching that web site thoroughly (so I thought) I was unable to find the jacket I had in mind, which I was sure they'd sold a year ago.
I went back today and there it was right at the top of the page. Oh well, so much for having done a thorough search. The jacket I'm thinking of is called a Wataire Hanten, or "Japanese bed jacket". Apparently hanten is a general word for jacket (the happi coats are also called hanten on some pages, but other pages claim that a hanten is specifically what a tradesman/merchant wore) and the "wataire" refers to the fact that it's filled with cotton batting. Sort of like a wearable quilt or comforter.
Anyway I haven't actually ordered one, although they still sound like a good idea. I can only find the one web site that sells them and they only offer the one style. But while I was doing my search, I came across another web site that sells Chinese/Asian clothing, and I couldn't resist ordering a suedette kung fu jacket, which just looked too cool.
They also carry some cool shirts and some cool windwater satin pants that look just like what Ranma typically wears. ^_^
