I'm good at jumping to conclusions, so when I recently had various problems getting a cd ripped and then burning cds, I came to the conclusion that my cd burner must be dying, and I went out and bought a new one.

This morning I installed it, replacing the old one. Things went smoothly, and I quickly had my "shaman rock/music" cd ready to burn. And, once again, it failed to burn correctly.

When Nero went to burn it gave me a new message I hadn't seen before, something about copyright proection not supported. Anyway I went ahead and tried again, and this time I paid closer attention to what it was doing as it burned the cd, and lo and behold, it went to burn a Yat-Kha tune from their new cd, and instantly shut down.

Hmmm. This is also the cd I had a lot of problems ripping. I wound up using a different computer and Windows Media to rip the first track on this cd, because when I did it with my normal computer and dMC Audio, I got a track that wasn't listenable.

So I checked the cd. It's an import from England, and there isn't much of any warnings on it about copy protection, but it has the phrase "All Songs Copyright Control". It says to look inside for more information, but there is no more information, unless it was on an insert that I threw away. But apparently this has been my problem all along. The tracks from this cd have some sort of copy protection scheme, and Nero barfs every time it tries to burn one of these tracks.

Surprisingly enough, Windows Media rips and burns these tracks just fine and dandy. So I spent the next hour re-assembling my "shaman rock" cd in Win Media and burning it from there. ^_^

And I guess my old cd burner isn't dying after all, so now I have an extra to put into my other computer.
