Another Day, Another Fifty Bowl Games...
Jan. 2nd, 2006 10:10 pmSo today I didn't have to work or anything, but I wasn't sure exacty what I DID want to do. One of the side-effects of not playing Second Life very often is that when I have a lot of free time it's not taken up by gaming, and then I kind of feel lost. I mean, I haven't gotten back into writing yet... as any writer knows, writing tends to make you want to write more, not writing tends to make it harder to actually start writing again.
So anyway,
jeffreycornish and
geojlc offered to bring me a bunch of boxes. You can never have too many boxes, you know. I've already begun to box things up -- another of my Resolutions (or Goals if you prefer) is to pack a few boxes a day, so that I can avoid the whole "pack at the last minute" thing that other people I could mention (Tom) went through.
BTW, Tom managed a couple more trips today. He's still not completely moved out, but he's getting closer and closer.
Also I talked to the landlord. I was hoping for an answer along the lines of A) You don't have to pay rent this month, the new guys just want you out, or B) You can give us notice that you want to leave by the end of the month, and since last month's rent was paid a long time ago, you don't have to pay rent.
Instead I got something much more complicated... the new owners won't take possession of the property for two weeks, halfway through the month. My landlord doesn't really know what they want or expect from me, other than they probably can't demolish the place for six months but apparently would prefer to have it empty as soon as possible. They might need to give me at least 30 day's notice and maybe need to help pay for me to relocate. In the meantime, he suggested I pay him this month's rent and he'd forward half of it on to the new owners for the second half of the month, and he acknowledged that they would also be handing the cleaning deposit and last month's rent on to the new owners, which would be given to me when I moved out. He said that last month's rent amounted to $350.00, which I can't argue since the place has been continuously rented since before I moved in. I do have a lease from years ago that says that last month's rent equals $630.00, which is what the rent was at that time, but I already knew that whatever had been paid way back when, it wasn't really $630.00.
I'm still inclined to give a month's notice and pay half a month's rent, with the $350.00 from the "last month's rent" covering for the other half of the month. I believe if I give notice that I'll be out by the end of the month, I can use the last month's rent to cover rent for my last month (or whatever portion it would cover). But I want to make sure that whatever I do, that my landlord is in agreement with it. But of course, the complication is that I have to deal with the new owners too, and even my current landlord hasn't been in direct contact/conversation with them that much. It goes without saying that I haven't talked to them at all.
So! as previously mentioned, Jeff and Jeri-Lynn brought me more boxes, and then we drove down to Fry's, where they picked up several things that did not include a plastic floor mat (the kind that goes under your rolling chair) which they had meant to pick up before we left -- they just didn't want to drag one around the store for an hour first. But it was, of course, forgotten about completely after an hour of browsing nifty stuff. I picked up a dvd -- Kodacha volume 1. I would have grabbed Firefly if they had it. I looked in the Sci Fi section as well, and noted that they didn't even have Serenity. So basically Fry's sucks.
Then we drove to Ikea for dinner. You might think that strange, but they have a very good caffeteria there. Jeff had Swedish meatballs (you were expecting Peruvian meatballs maybe?) and Jeri-Lynn and I both had the salmon dinner which was quite good, and quite cheap too. Then we wandered the store for an hour. I'd never been in there before, but I also wasn't planning to spend any money just before moving, or buy any furniture that I'd just have to move in a few weeks.
When I got home I packed more books and cds and did some laundry. ^_^
