I remember when I was poor, when I worked part time for $4.25 an hour. I remember seeing computer equipment at work and wishing I had that at home. I remember in particular seeing a 9600 baud modem in our computer room and thinking how ungodly fast that was, and wouldn't it be cool to have a modem that fast? (This was back in the days when a 1200 baud modem was top of the line for most people who actually used modems.)
I thought of that today because for the last three days when I've gone downstairs, there have been two big boxed computer towers sitting in the mail/storage room. They appear to be brand new computers, and I wonder why they've just been sitting around for several days. It's the sort of thing that I might have dreamed of somehow possessing, back when I was young and poor. Not that I would ever actually steal anything like that -- all I ever stole from work was a few pens and maybe some white-out or glue or staples, I guess. But the point is, I look at them now, and instead of thinking, "I wish I could own that", I think, "Well, those must be pretty nice computers, but I have three good computers at home already and three lesser ones that I don't even know what to do with."
It's the same with my books, manga, cds, dvds, etc. I have things I'm interested in, but not very much that I truly covet. I own so much stuff already, and if it's something that I really, really want, I just buy it. There are cds that I want -- I haven't picked up the latest White Stripes or Stellastar cds, for example -- but in general I have more music than I can possibly listen to, so whether I pick them up in a week or in six months, it isn't such a big deal. Right now with all my packing, I'm more interested in getting rid of stuff than in collecting more stuff.
So... at the moment I'm expecting to bring an art easel and a bunch of D&D figurines to writer's night, and possibly some other stuff I've forgotten about. I have a lot of Japanese-language manga that I want to give away, does anyone want it? In particular I have a nearly complete collection of Ranma 1/2 (missing volumes 3&4), I have a complete Video Girl Ai, I have various Tenchi Muyou manga, some Ah My Goddess film comic things, some of those dual-language manga (mostly Love Hina, but also an Ah My Goddess one and a Princess Knight one), and various weird odds and ends, manga that I don't even know what it is per se. Also I have a bunch of the really thick phone-book sized newsprint manga digest volumes that I thought were really cool when I got them (I forget where from), but since then they've been buried in my room.
But wait, there's more! Well, not a lot more, I really haven't culled my collection much, but a few other books of various sorts. Also I have my collection of Gallery which I seem to recall that at some point I told Chuck he could have, and he was interested. Oh yeah, I need to bring Elfy fanzines for Sheryl if she shows up. I think that's it! ^_^
