Apr. 8th, 2006 02:21 amYou get such interesting topics on the Second Life forums. Well, not really. But I go there and read a couple of threads every once in a while anyway.
Tonight I read a thread in which a girl whose avatar was a furry cat anthro ranted about the "discrimination" going on in Gorean Sims. I'm not really going to get into what a "Gorean" sim is... suffice it to say a lot of people like to build their little role-play fantasy worlds around third-rate fantasy novels (yes, we're talking John Norman of Gor, etc.) Anyway it seems that a lot of the Gorean sims ban furries outright, and this person was convinced it was blatant discrimination. Never mind that these people are paying a lot of money to bring their fantasies to life in SL, and would just as likely ban someone walking around as Spock from Star Trek or as a rabid Manchester United fan, or whatever.
Anyway, my favorite comment (and right on target) was this:
"On a side note, it blows my mind how terms like "discrimination" get tossed around like so much confetti when the situation involves two groups of people playing Let's Pretend. One's playing cowboys and indians and won't let you come in the clubhouse when you're dressed up like a fairy princess. That's discrimination nowadays?"
Almost as good was the comment that followed from another person:
"When I was a kid, my brother wouldn't allow my Wookie to play with his and his buddy's GI Joes. Later, when I was into GI Joes too, our sister's Barbies were not allowed to come in our GI Joe Fortress we'd built under the stairs."
People can get upset about anything under the sun. Nice to see it put in perspective. ^_^
Of course, the other interesting thing about the whole thread is that furries and Goreans are pretty much equally looked down on by a lot of people in SL....
