You'd think I wouldn't complain about having so much neat music to choose from, but sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. Just when I thought I had a handle on folk/medieval hard rock/metal, I discover a whole new branch of such music that I didn't realize existed.

I subscribed to Dirty Linen magazine a couple of weeks ago. It covers Folk and World Music, and while I've picked up issues before I never subscribed. But it's one of those magazines that's right up my alley, so I don't know why I didn't subscribe before now.

Their current issue arrived today, with a big cover article on German Medieval Music. As they explain, the term "folk music" is not generally used in Germany because Hitler wedded German folk music to his Nazi party so successfully that folk music is still associated with the Nazi Germany era. But in Germany they have "Medieval Festivals" which are a bit like our Rennaisance Faires, and out of these have come a whole slew of groups that meld medieval German music with modern rock. Right up my alley? You'd better believe it!

So now I have a whole bunch of new groups to keep track of, with names like Adaro, Corvus Corvax, Faun, In Extremo, Qntal, Subway to Sally, Estampie, Saltio Mortis, Schandmaul... the list goes on. Not to mention bands that I'd heard of but never listened to, like the Medieval Babes. I'm listening to sound samples on Amazon now, and in particular I like the first three: Adaro, Corvus Corvax, Faun. Some of these bands, Corvus Corvax and Saltio Mortis for example, employ multiple bagpipes and/or hurdy gurdys in their mix... well anyway, hard for me not to like that kind of thing. ^_^

Oy! Now I need to figure out if I can afford to order anything before the end of the month... well, you know, plastic money is plastic money, but I try to not go overboard....

On the positive side, they had a choice of two different cds that I could pick from as a free cd that I got with my subscription. With no idea what was on either of them aside from their titles, I picked the one titled "Stand and Deliver: A Medieval Music Compilation". When I looked at it at work I recognized none of the bands, and noted that it referred to a Rennaisance Faire in Pennsylvania (it's not clear if these are live recordings from there, it doesn't say they are, but I haven't listened to it yet). I have to admit, I thought, "Hmm, probably some lame RenFaire crap." But now, having read the article on German Medieval Music, I see that many of the bands they mentioned are featured on this cd. Score! Curvus Corax, Faun, Sava, Potentia Animi, Estampie, Des Teufels Lockvoegel, Empyrium, Irfan, Angels of Venice, Solace, Van Langen, Blackmore's Night, Unto Ashes, Schelmish, Filia Trata, and Sarband are the bands on the cd. Much music to explore!

BTW when I visited the Amazon page for Corvus Corax's "best of" cd, there were at least five reviews in a row that essentially all said, "I'd never heard of them before seeing them play at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire..." I guess they made quite an impresion there. ^_^
