Jul. 3rd, 2006 11:45 amToday is Canada Day. Well, not really, it was on Saturday, but since getting Saturday off is pretty much standard every week, Canadians mostly got today off too. I know this doesn't affect a lot of people, but it means there won't be any Canadian drivers bringing freight down from Canada to us today. And of course, they won't be doing that tomorrow either, because we won't be at work on the 4th. So if you didn't get your Canadian shipment out of Canada last Friday, you've got a long wait for your freight.
So I have to work today but it probably will be a very light day.
Yesterday I got up and played a little WoW and then went out to get stuff to make chili. Before I left, I tried to convert my account from a "trial" account to a live subscribing account, but they wanted to charge me $39.95 as if I'd bought the game. LAME. I decided if I had to buy the game, why not actually buy the game? (They allow you to upgrade your trial account with a store bought game key too, so you don't lose your new characters.)
I wanted to upgrade because there are a lot of things that a trial account can't do... like send messages to other characters, or even trade anything at all. Seriously, I couldn't give or recieve a single copper piece to or from anyone else.
Well, despite Mike's assertion that the game is selling for $19.95, I already knew that it wasn't selling for anything close to that price at Fry's or Fred Meyers, but I went to CompUSA and they had a holiday weekend special, $29.95 (regularly $39.95, exactly what WoW wanted me to pay online). I also wasted money on a strategy guide. Sky had reccomended I pick one up, but I hate those things, they are often very inaccurate, out of date, and many times just horribly researched (in the case of Everquest and especially in the case of City of Heroes). But I'd already run into a couple of situations in the game where I was supposed to go somewhere but didn't know where it was, or wanted to know more about something, so I figured, it has maps and pretty pictures, it'll probably help a bit.
And then the guy at the store tried to convince me not to buy it because of those same reasons I'd given Sky. Dude, I know all that, I've made a decision to buy it anyway, I'm not a clueless noob and you're not supposed to talk me out of buying things at your store. But he was just trying to be helpful.
Another thing I did before I left was work on my cd for my nephew a bit. I'll need to have those done by the weekend, I don't want to wait until the last minute. I tried to print out a track listing but as usual my printer wasn't printing well. I thought it just needed new ink, and I had a new ink cartridge to put in it, but trying to convince it to slide the shuttle out where I could put new ink in it was a chore. To put a new ink cartridge in, hold the ink button down for 3 seconds. To send the printer into a self-test/head cleaning proceedure that lasts a minute and a half, hold the ink button down for 3 seconds. Turns out if the printer doesn't think it's out of ink, there's no way to convince it to pop out and let you change the ink cartidge.
But I finally got the cartridge changed. I printed a test page that didn't look any better than before, and then the printer decided it was out of ink.
What a piece of crap. Well, it was an old printer, it was obviously getting ready to die.
So my other reason to go to CompUSA was to get a new printer. I got a cheap one for $99.99 that includes a scanner and looks like it'll do everything I could expect a printer to do (much better than what I was using, I'm sure).
I stopped at Silver Platters and amazingly avoided buying any new music. Woo!
Then I went home, made chili, and played World of Warcraft.
I have yet to really decide what kind of a character I want to play. To start with, I made a human warlock and played her to level 3. I tried to name her Vashti but that was taken, so I went with Vashtii. Then I made a night elf druid. I tried to name her Jalia but that was taken so I named her Jaliah. I played her to level 12 over about 3 days. Druids are cool and all, they can do lots of different things, but I dunno. I don't like how the night elves look and I don't like all their dark and gloomy forests, very hard to see anything there.
So I made a cute gnome warrior named Jehnna. I played her to level 13. Warriors are fun, you get to run in and bash things silly. I haven't yet decided if I want to play her as my main character though, I generally like to be able to solo a bit, and warriors aren't especially meant to solo.
So I made a dwarf hunter. I was trying to come up with a good name, tried a few things that were taken. Tried "Yuki" which is Japanese for snow, that was taken, and then I thought of the three goddesses in Ah! My Goddess, nice Norse names, perfect for a dwarf from the snowy North. Of course, "Skuld" and "Urd" were already taken, and I didn't even attempt "Belldandy", but then, the three Norns were actually named Urd, Skuld, and Verdandi. Turns out lots of people know their manga but don't know their Norse mythology... Verdandi wasn't taken.
(And how do you get "Belldandy" out of "Verdandi"? Well in Japanese, there is no "v" so they substitute the "b" sound... and there is no seperate "r" and "l", but a sound that is halfway in between. This is why "mock Japanse" switches r's and l's around, because to our ears their l sounds a bit like an r, and their r sounds a bit like an l... it's the same sound for both of course.)
Anyway I played my new hunter up to level 10 and got the ability to charm pets.
And then, not satisfied, I made a human rogue who I named Ozmia (Ozma was taken of course). Eh, I suppose naming a sneaky backstabbing thief after the Princess of Oz doesn't make much sense anyway.
I still haven't had a reason to trade anything with anyone though.
