So, on what might be the coldest night of the year, I decided that if I'm ever going to build a fire, tonight's the night. I did so as soon as I got home (driving up the hill was no problem tonight btw). I used nice dry firewood from Fred Meyers.

The moment I lit the fire, smoke began to fill my apartment. Apparently my chimney doesn't work, or is closed, or something. I don't see any way to open or close the flue -- I don't think there is such a thing. It's a very simple design, it barely qualifies as a fireplace at all so probably it's just borked.

Anyway, it's a very cold night and for the moment I have my front door and my sliding door open to let in the breeze. Yay. And my smoke detector is lying on the recliner, where it doesn't feel the need to scream at me. The fire should go out eventually... but apparently I built a very good fire, so it may take a little while.

BTW -- is there some way to forcibly remove the "find" feature from Mozilla Firefox, preferably with extreme prejudice? For one I don't like how it pops up at the bottom of the screen -- is a pull down window like you get with IE so difficult? But mostly what I don't like is how it randomly decides that when I want to type a certain character, what I really mean is I want to do a search. This happens to me when I'm updating in Livejournal -- suddenly every time I try to type what I want to type, instead of characters appearing on the screen, that damned search field pops up at the bottom of the screen. Again and again and again. I want to rip it out and drag it to a dark alley and beat it to death.
