Mar. 11th, 2007 07:28 pmToday's projects: Did some cleaning -- swept and mopped floors in the kitchen and bathrooms, did laundry, hung my bathroom shelf/cabinet thingy on the wall which I've been meaning to do for over a year now. I also need to hang up my light-up wall picture thingy that my sister gave me for my birthday I think last Summer... but I need some wall hooks to do that.
Made some soup/stew using beef broth, hamburger, and beans and veggies. Probably not quite as healthy and low-carb as I could have made it, since it has the beans and some small potatoes in it, but still not bad.
Writing: Haven't done any yet, but it's on my list of things to accomplish today.
Spent some money buying more music online that I don't need (but I needed it really!). One cd though I got outbid on, I was good and let it go. That's the second time I've tried to pick up that cd and been outbid on, but I only want to pay so much for it.
I was listening to Fairyland's "The Fall of an Empire" and reading along. As I thought, it's their own self-contained epic fantasy story. Some world called Osyria or something built by the gods with seven kingdoms on seven continents, each has a magic stone to protect it. Everyone is happy and wise and this attracts the attention of bad jealous people. The Dark Lord arises, kills people, gets imprisoned for a thousand years. At the end he escapes again and gathers the stones of power to himself and conquers the kingdoms... and this is where the cd starts, with the songs telling the story of defeat, enslavement in the Dark Lord's lands, and the arise of heroes who free the people and defeat the Dark Lord.
You know, Tolkien redux, reduced to a heavy metal soundtrack for a movie/book that doesn't actually exist. ^_^
Some of the band's influences were telling... the band leader listed Terry Pratchett as a big influence, but also John Williams, Danny Elfman, and a bunch of other OST composers. They all list other metal bands as influences of course, but one guy lists Michael Jackson as his first influence, and artists like Mike Oldfield, ELP, and classical composers like Listz, Bach, Mozart, Rachmaninov. And, of course, the lead guitarist thanks himself and his own amazing guitarwork first and foremost, and also all the women he's slept with, and cigarettes, and whiskey. He's clearly not the brains of the outfit.

Other bands I've been listening to:
Edenbridge
Rhapsody (Rhapsody of Fire)
Thy Majestie
Thy Majestie is most interesting... they are essentially doing what Rhapsody of Fire and Fairyland are dong -- aka epic soundtrack-like power metal -- but they write about actual historical events. Their most recent cd is "Jeanne d'Arc", and the previous cd was "Hastings 1066". The theme of each cd should be obvious from the titles. ^_^
