Mar. 31st, 2007 09:39 amIt's about 9:30 am. I went to bed at 4:00 am so I really need to go back to bed and get a little more sleep, but sometimes I wake up and I'm too awake to go right back to sleep.
I stayed up late playing City of Heroes. I like the game, but I don't have any friends who play it. One friend from Second Life talked me into coming back to the game in January, and I've played with her exactly once since then. This is very typical. In any case I remembered why I enjoyed the game so much more than other mmorpgs (such as WoW) so I have no intentions of dropping it for anything else right now.
(I did notice that the latest and greatest mmorpg on the marked, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, which is made by some of the original creators of Everquest and is yet another fantasy-based game, proudly proclaims that one of its special features is "no instances!". Which makes me laugh because instances was a hot cool new feature just a few years ago that got rid of the problem of massively crowded, overcamped dungeons/areas. City of Heroes is rife with instanced missions and I like my game that way just fine, thank you. "No instances!" is not a promise that makes me MORE likely to buy a game, it's one that makes me LESS likely to buy it.)
Anyway although I have no good friends in the game, I've been in a Super Group for a while. It's a small one mostly run by two close friends. They are fairly young and sometimes immature, and they get into arguments and curse each other out. I don't really think of them as good friends, or even people I'm fond of playing with. But it's a Super Group.
In a week both of them are dropping the game so they can concentrate more on schoolwork. That will leave me in charge of a Super Group with a dumb name that I don't like, a nice Super Group base, and 2-3 other members who log in very, very rarely. I'm not sure if I'll keep the group or not.
I have several people I've met in-game that have become casual friends that I play with a lot. I've grouped with them a great deal since I was in my early 30's, and now my character is level 44. Every member of this group is in a different supergroup, but we play well together and we all play late at night which are the main things. I don't even have any of them as global friends though -- which means you can talk to each other no matter which characters you're playing or which server you're on. So I'm not sure what will happen when we all reach level 50, whet her we'll play together much after that or not.
Plans for the weekend include making a trip to Costco and not spending money. My parents are at a campground in the area and are supposed to drop by Sunday at Noon so we can go to lunch. This likely means they will drop by before Noon, so I probably need to be up and ready to go by 11 am at the latest. No staying up late gaming tonight!
Battlelore's cd Evernight arrived in the mail last night. I ordered a copy almost as soon as it was available. I realize that this, and the fact that it's their fourth cd and I own all of them, probably means they can be considered one of my favorite bands. I mean, there are many other bands I like but I haven't collected all their work and I don't rush to buy their latest cd right when it comes out.
Battlelore is an odd band. It's hard to know exactly what to call them. They have elements of folk and power metal, progressive metal and a little goth metal in the mix. They have some of the theatrics of bands like Lordi (which is a band that owes a lot to Gwar) and they are strongly fantasy-oriented like many power metal and viking metal bands. But every song they write is based on Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.
I picked up their first cd out of curiosity. I liked it enough to buy their second release, which was better and had a few songs that I fell in love with (especially "Forked Height", a song about Saruman's tower). Their third cd was even better -- lots of stuff that I liked on that one. And so, I now have their fourth cd, and it's also very good. ^_^
