I. After noticing problems with his old computer, our intrepid hero wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Windows. Eventually he learned that A) The problem was most likely the motherboard/processor, and B) After backing up only the files he'd worked on in the last 3-4 weeks (since his last full-scale backup of all files), He somehow forgot that he'd written half of a members newsletter article on the subject of "The Fine Art of Procrastination". Whereupon we learn that the only thing better about writing half an article on the subject of procrastination and then putting off finishing it is finding a way to lose the half you've already written.

II. After noticing that the computer likes to reset the video settings to the bare minimum defaults on startup, our hero consults with the Computer God and learns that he will have to remove and reinstall the video drivers. He downloads the latest driver, leaves it on the desktop where it can be easily found and installed, and proceeds to uninstall not the old Nvidia video driver, but in fact the Nvidia motherboard drivers. Whereupon he is unable to do anything and must consult the Computer God again. Careful instruction allows him to do a "repair" install of Windows that saves him from having to reinstall all of his other programs yet again. So he thinks....

III. Days pass. Windows will not update. At all. He consults the Computer God, who assures him that Microsoft is just confused about daylight savings time lasting a week longer. Correction: Microsoft is more confused than usual, because daylight savings time has started a week early. Whereupon we learn that Senators and Presidents cannot be trusted to give you the time of day.

IV. After daylight savings time has passed, the computer still will not update anything Windows related. It is constantly downloading updates that wil not install. It wants to update at every opportunity, but it can't. The computer cries out for help. Our hero ignores it, because everything else is working fine and he's tired of trying to fix the computer. Whereupon we learn that if it isn't needed right now, it can bloody well wait until later.

V. Our hero decides to run LJUpdate in order to research his past posts. However, LJUPdate has not been reinstalled yet. It won't reinstall until .Net Framework 2.0 is installed. This cannot be installed because nothing Windows-related will install on the computer. Whereupon we learn that oh, that's right, we were planning to do a complete reinstall at some point to try and fix this problem.

VI. After backing up files, our hero sticks in the install program. It immediately asks if he wants to install Windows. Huh, think he, maybe I don't even have to muck about with rebooting from the disc and wiping the driver first. He proceeds to install Windows, although he is puzzled that it never asks him where to install it. When he is done, he reboots, and learns that he now has two copies of Windows installed. Whereupon we learn... well, that our hero may not know what he's doing.

VII. Annoyed now, our hero reboots from the disc drive and reformats drive D. He then reinstalls Windows from scratch. All goes according to plan, but when he is done and reboots Windows, he still has two copies of Windows installed. After due consideration, our hero realizes that the other copy of Windows must have been installed on Drive C (music backup drive). He deletes the Window folders from the drive. However, this does not remove all of WIndows from that drive... and every time he reboots his computer it pauses 30 seconds to see if he wast to boot from the backup drive that no longer actually contains a full copy of Windows to boot from.

VIII. Ignoring this problem, our hero makes everything else work and gives up for the day.

I should probably be working on my NaNoWriMo story... but I spent the whole morning reinstalling things on my computer, then taking a walk, and then goofing around watching videos on Youtube....
