Making a mess...
Aug. 12th, 2008 08:26 pm1. Filled two small containers with blackberries. I wore my bike gloves for protection, since the palms are leather and they're fingerless that worked well.
2. Took my walk.
3. Went back to work for my coat which I'd left there.
4. Stopped at Fred Meyers, bought stuff.
5. Rested an hour or so after I got home (5:30, 2 1/2 hours after I left work :P )
6. Washed berries.
7. Made dough. I used whole wheat flour and I needed to add more water, milk and canola oil because of it I think... far too dry otherwise.
8. Added mix of water, splenda, and vanilla extract to stove. It was supposed to have grated orange rind too, but I didn't buy an orange. I added some lemon juice in the hopes that that would be a reasonable substitute. I almost couldn't find the vanilla extract and was a fraid I didn't have any, but although I rarely use it, I did have some. Mix seemed like not very much, so I doubled it. This was likely a mistake, because after I added the berries they started to cook down and there was plenty of liquid.
9. Made a mix of water and corn starch to add to the berries... except I used corn meal because I didn't have corn starch. Not sure how much of a problem that might be, it all gets mixed in with the berry mix so hopefully not very much. Or is corn starch and corn meal the same thing?
10. Dumped all of the berries into one pan. I bought cheap disposable pans at the store, and was thinking of making two cobblers tonight but I decided that I didn't have enough berries for two. Anyway the second one I was thinking of making for writer's night, so if I do it won't hurt to do it Friday. Berries filled up pan... I might have added too much.
11. Rolled out dough and cut into long strips and laid them on top of the berries. Had trouble rolling them out, and some of them were pretty thick, but at least I actually have a roller (I didn't really know for sure if I did). Tried to pretend that I knew what I was doing, but clearly I don't. Hopefully it doesn't really matter. After laying them out I decided to interlace them, which mean that some were by then covered in berry juice (too much juice, too many berries). Then I brushed them with margarine as if they weren't already soaked in berry juice. Surprised to find I had a brush to do that with, too.
12. Into the oven for 35 minutes! The cheapo pan is very unwieldy, so I put it on a pizza pan. That could be a problem taking it to work tomorrow. I probably need ice cream for this too... what's blackberry cobbler without ice cream?
13. And... now it's done. Lots of dishes in the sink, and a wobbly pan of blackberry cobbler cooling on the stove. It didn't suddenly get prettier in the oven but it looks and smells edible, and it didn't bubble and boil all over the place like I was afraid it might.
