miko2: Ranma disguised as a schoolgirl to fool Ryoga (Default)
I picked up an anime show called Otoboku at Fry's last week. It's one Tom liked too, and we watched the first five episodes. Then I ordered volume 2 from Amazon.

Tom handed me cash and asked me to order a copy for him too. For some reason, he doesn't like to order stuff online or know how or something, I dunno. Anyway, the dvd arrived yesterday and I watched two episodes last night and t wo this morning.

Then I went to Crunchyroll and watched the next episode.

I can tell that the translation is different. The one at Crunchyroll is not professional, and while a very good translation, I can see that the official translation flows better. The pros work harder at a coherent translation than the fans. Fans typically favor a more literal translation anyway, I think.

For example, as the end of episode 9 Takako asks Mariya about Mizhujo:

"Is she my enemy or my friend? She helps me then she demeans me. She is like a kaleidoscope. I can't see clearly who she is."

This conversation is repeated at the beginning of episode 10 -- it's a 2 part episode so they wanted a little recap. However, the fan translation is a little less clear:

"My enemy or my ally? A person who wants to save me or drop me? It's like a kaleidoscope of feelings that I cannot grasp. I want to know that person's real self."

No doubt a more literal translation, but a less sensible one in English.

However, this part I fail to understand completely: in the professional translation of the opening theme song, they sing "Please come with me, amen" and "My heart full up, so love, love, love" (typical anime theme lyrics, the 'amen" is tossed in apparently because the anime takes place at a Catholic girl's school).

But in the fan sub they sing, "Please come with me away," and "My heart will love, so love, love, love".

My problem with this is that these lyrics are sung in English -- so you're translating English into English, and you're doing it wrong. Hello? Fail! :p

Nothing really new when it comes to translating lyrics but it still made me laugh.
