Oct. 15th, 2008 06:26 pmMy iPod was acting odd today. I started listening to it at work sometime early this morning, and unlike usual I stared much earlier than I normally do and didn't turn it off all day. As a result, I made it through 112 songs on my main playlist which consists of 159 songs total. Then I went for a walk after work and continued on through the playlist until I'd heard the first 127 songs in a row. I'm not sure I ever played that far through a single list before.
Now, this playlist is one that I have on shuffle. I am not able to set a single playlist to shuffle on my iPod.
typographer didn't believe me when I said this last week, but I tried again, and there's no way to do it -- if I select a playlist to play, then there is no shuffle option available anywhere; if I go out to the main menu where the shuffle button is, it shuffles the entire library on the iPod. Mine is one of the older iPods so I assume that the ability to shuffle within a given playlist was added to later models.
In any case, the way I handle this is to add/delete new songs in iTunes and then shuffle the playlist there before syncing with my iPod, which gives me a new, random song order for that day.
But for some reason, after I got past 100 songs I began to notice something odd. 3 Pernice Brothers songs played in a row. After three other songs, 3 John Vanderslice songs played in a row, then 4 songs by The Long Winters, then 2 Battlelore songs, then a song by a different band, then 4 songs by Aveo all in a row, and after two other songs, two songs by Luna in a row.
Past that point, the list seems to be mostly random, but later on there are two New Pornographer songs in a row, one by Band of Horses, one by Field Music, two Orange Peel songs in a row, another by the New Pornographers, one by The Mommyheads, then two in a row by Too Much Joy. At the end of the list are two songs by The Owls and two songs by Brandi Carlile.
The Brandi Carlile songs are ones I just added and I could explain them by saying that somehow it didn't get shuffled and updated after I added them... they're at the end of the list after all. But as for the rest? It just seems odd that so many groups have several songs come up right after each other. It is never all the songs by a given group, or even all the songs from a given cd, so the list is still sorting randomly, to some extent. But then... how did that all happen?
Ah well.
