miko2: Ranma disguised as a schoolgirl to fool Ryoga (Default)
It was a nice afternoon and I went on a walk. I listened to the Radiolab podcast, which was a rebroadcast of their episode about Orson Welles broadcast of War of the Worlds, and of other similar broadcasts that also caused a panic, and why people keep falling for these stories. I thought again that my old roommate Tom should hear this show, he's a huge War of the Worlds fan.

When I got back home I looked up War of the Worlds on Wikipedia, just to see if there were any other incidents of the show being broadcast and causing panic that weren't mentioned in the Radiolab show. I saw a mention of the version of the show done by L.A. Theatre Works "The Play's the Thing", a faithful recreation of the original Welles radio play with many former Star Trek actors -- Leonard Nimoy, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Wil Wheaton, Meagan Fay, Herry Hardin, Dwight Schultz, Armin Shimerman, Tom Virtue, and John de Lancie. I remembered listening to that show.

Just then the phone rang. It was Tom. He wanted to get together to watch anime. I told him that tonight was writer's night, so I would be going to that in a few hours. We talked, and I mentioned the Radiolab show I'd just listened to. He immediately said, "Oh, the one with the Star Trek actors? Yes, you told me about that before, you said it was really cool."

I said that no, that was the Play's the Thing. But I remembered that I'd wanted Tom to hear that version, too.

I made plans to call Tom after writer's night if I was up to it and go over to visit him. He's on a swing shift so he's used to staying up late.

So then... I thought, I should see if I could burn a copy of the Radiolab episode, and maybe even the L.A. Theatre Works show. This, it turns out, was ridiculously easy to accomplish. In about 20 minutes I downloaded everything and burned 3 discs.
