Jun. 2nd, 2009 05:10 pmso in my quest to try something different, I thought I'd check out what new online games are out there. Partly this is because I'm attempting to work on one of my old stories (that I'll probably never actually finish or publish) that involves an online VR gaming world, and I really haven't played anything but City of Heroes or Second Life in ages. I wanted to do some reasearch.
I watched some videos of different character creations systems for other games and some "fashion show" videos for games like World of Warcraft and Lineage II. I'm kind of fascinated by Lineage II. I know I'd never enjoy playing it because it's a Korean hard core grinding and PvP game, but I can't help but like the visual eye candy the game has to offer. Along with incredibly detailed graphics and costumes, a lot of the female outfits are... well, in some cases incredibly cute or incredibly sexy, in other cases downright disturbing and borderline sexist. Or so it appears to me. What I mean is... as far as I can tell, light elf women seem to wear a lot of short skirts, all of the women show skin in nearly all their costumes and pose with their chests stuck way out, and the dark elf women in particular have huge breats and wear as little as possible.
Anyway, all of that aside, I decided to check out a pair of more-or-less "free to play" mmorpgs. One is Entropia Universe, and is free to download and play but, even more than Second Life, expects you to spend real world money to get anywhere. I'm wary of that type of service but it sounds like a cross between a Second Life Virtual World and a space-based RPG. I think my ultimate dream MMORPG allows me an unlimited supply of looks, costumes, and skins (like Second Life), but has a gameplay side like most other MMORPGs and is not another fantasy-based game. One of the reasons I've stuck with City of Heroes is because I can look like almost anything I want to (within the limits of their character creator) and I can fly high above the city. ^_^
The other game is Gekkieju Online. It's apparently a completely free-to-play anime-style fantasy MMORPG. I have no idea how good it will be (not very, actually), but I already like them for their disclaimer:
Playing of Gekkeiju Online can cause: alcoholism, retardness, bad grades at school, addiction, satanism, communism, anti-americanism, cross dressing, alcoholism, cancer, internal bleeding, starvation, forest fires, vegetarism, loss of mental health, alcoholism, impotence, long and painful death, sister complex, apathy, retardness, epilepsy, fatness, lazyness, inflation, gender confusion, global warming, sarcasm, geekiness, miscarriages, bad spelling, boredom, global catastrophes, pastafarism, child labor, slavery, brainwashing and general failure in life.
Also in their age statement and terms of service agreement, by clicking yes you agree "you understand the difference between online games and reality", "You have no urge to commit school slaughters and have not sacrificed your neighbor's pet lemming", "you agree NOT to LOL in the company of the Gekkeiju Online Administration" and "You agree if you are a mutant traitor communist, you won't try to conquer America and the rest of the world."
Heh. ^_^
Actually, this video blows me away (requires an age statement but nothing shocking to see here):
