Oct. 25th, 2009 02:21 amJust got back from seeing Shonen Knife in Ballard at the Tractor Tavern with
jeffreycornish. It was fun. Opening band Connecticut Four was a three-piece band from Bellingham (of course). Three girls playing power pop, kinda like Shonen Knife but less polished and less harmonic. But they had a great drummer, and were very energetic.
Second band was Visqueen who are a very good band, very tight with an excellent singer, but their songs tended to sound like each other. They also had a cello player who you could not hear at all. Cristina Bautista is their bassist, and she also happens to be the bassist/main singer of Connecticut Four, so that probably explains how the one band wound up on the ticket. ^_^
Shonen Knife was awesome. They opened with Konnichiwa and then Banana Chips (both from Happy Hour). Their one-song encore was also from that cd, Sushi Bar. In between they played a few cuts from their most recent cds (Super Group, Pyramid Power and BBQ Party from Super Group, Barnacle and Ramones Forever from Fun Fun Fun). Their set of "classic Shonen Knife" included Devil House, Twist Barbie, and Riding On the Rocket. They played Giant Kitty from Genki Shock, and Map Master from Heavy Songs, and also I Wanna Eat Choco Bars from The Birds and the B-Sides and Johnny Johnny Johnny from Rock Animals. I didn't hear any songs from Candy Rock or Strawberry Sound (not surprising) nor from Brand New Knife (a little surprising, since I like that cd quite a bit).
Anyway, lots of fun. My one disappointment was that they didn't have an English version of Fun Fun Fun for sale. I guess they sold those on their last tour, but you can't buy them anywhere now. I was hoping I could at least buy it from them. But I did buy a nice American tour tee shirt. ^_^
