Nov. 19th, 2009 08:46 amThere are a number of manga that I'm interested in that have never been translated into English -- Ushio & Tora, Akanechan Overdrive, Dragon Half, DNAngel, Video Girl AI, Twinkle Twinkle Idol Star, Peach Sabbath, Miracle Lingerie, Mr. Clice. I also wish all of 3x3 Eyes had been translated, rather than just a portion of it. In several cases I own the Japanese manga for these titles, and have "read" through them as well as I was able to.
In a few cases, manga that I already owned in Japanese has later been translated into English. This happened with the Five Star Stories, with Pretty Face, and technically even with Ah! My Goddess, since I started buying that manga in Japanese before Dark Horse began to translate it.
Most of the comics on this list that I've wanted to see translated are by now so old that the prospects of ever seeing them in English are pretty remote. (And to be honest, in some cases I'm not sure if they would be as entertaining if I actually knew what was going on.)
Anyway, I went to Barnes & Noble last night with a gift card from
typographer. I had several things I was looking for: Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett (they didn't have it), several books I'd heard about on NPR that I was interested in including Ian Baker's The Heart of the World, A Journey to TIbet's Lost Paradise, and Here, Bullet by Brian Turner. Anyway, I couldn't find any of the books on my list, none of them were classics or best sellers.
I did find a copy of Tetragramaton Labrynth vol 7, which was on my list. Then I found a copy of Your & My Secret vol 4, which I didn't know was out. Then I found something completely unexpected -- volumes 1 through 3 of Gestalt. There was an anime of this out years ago and it was one of those animes that only covered the first couple of chapters of a much longer manga... so I've always been interested to know more about what was going on. I'd even bought one volume of the manga.
Now it's in English. ^_^ I picked up all three volumes.
Also hit Half Price Books and picked up two other things. Dance of the Vampire Bund, a manga that sounds really interesting, and a small hardcover volume of Emily Dickinson's poetry. I'd looked for something like that at Barnes & Noble but they only had larger softcover volumes. Not only did I find what I wanted at Half Price, but it was only $4.
All of this was after I'd been to the dentist to get a gold crown. They didn't actually cover the entire tooth, but it covers nearly the whole top and all of one side.
I wrote less than a thousand words yesterday. Too busy with other things. Before that I'd written about 2200 words each on Monday and Tuesday. I'm still about 5,000 words behind where I'm supposed to be.
