When I started walking 2 1/2 years ago I bought a really good pair of hiking boots at Fred Meyers. They were $75.00 but I figured I should get something that would last. I loved them and wore them nearly every day, and they did last.
Over the last year I've thought about whether I should replace them with another pair. Fred Meyers still sells the same brand and style. But even though the tred was disappearing, they still looked and fit perfectly good.
But then I actually looked at them more closely, and realized why my traction was so poor. Not only had the tred worn completely through, there were places where the entire rubber sole had worn through, exposing the yellow sponge beneath.
I haven't had a lot of money the past few months so $75.00 for new boots was too much. Last week I decided to see what Walmart had. I found some nice hiking boots for $35.00 that I really liked. They were fur-lined, which appealed to me at the time. But then of course, the weather has been quite warm for the last week and I realized that fur-lined boots probably aren't the best option for year-round wear.
No problem, because I'd forgotten that I actually own a pair of black Doc Martin's. I've never worn them enough to break them in, but I guess now's the time.
I went walking in my new boots from Walmart last week, and immediately developed two blisters. One seems to have gone away but the other didn't, so wearing my new boots has been painful. I wore the Doc Martins to walk in over the weekend, but those are kind of painful to wear in a different way.
I guess I just need to keep wearing both pairs of boots until I've broken them in and I'm used to them. I still have tennis shoes if need be though.

Aside from getting my walking in I've been very lazy. I didn't walk on Saturday though, I was extra lazy that day. I was planning to go to writer's night though, even if I had nothing written myself (too lazy), but just as I was heading out the door at 5:50 PM the doorbell rang. It was a guy from Comcast wanting to "save me money" by signing me up for internet or telephone service. It actually sounds like a pretty good deal -- my internet service goes down if I add phone to it, their charge for the phone service is less than Qwest even not counting the drop in my Internet fee, and they will handle the switchover, cancel my Qwest account, and I keep the same number, plus they offer a few options Qwest probably can't, like phone ID that appears on my computer when I'm busy. Anyway, since I need to find more ways to save money I decided to listen to him and take the deal. By the time we were done, it was almost 6:30 PM. It was dark and I walked out to my car, and then realized that I just didn't feel like driving up to Seattle, and I didn't want to spend the money on gas either.
So I bailed and stayed home.
