Steampunk Music
Jun. 17th, 2010 03:45 pmMy ex-roommate Tom is really into Steampunk. Costuming, building steam engines, even the music. A visit to his place a few weeks ago (along with looking up a cd that
skyoxford had played for me) got me interested in what music makes for good Steampunk.
This last week I've subscribed to The Clockwork Cabaret, a 2-hour Steampunk music podcast. I think it's a small-time web podcast or done on some small college radio station; the hosts are clearly not professionals and are kind of annoying, but the music they play is fantastic. It includes a mix of bands and musicians I've listened to for years -- Flogging Molly, The Pogues, The Decemberists, They Might Be Giants, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Tom Waits, etc -- some bands I've discovered in my recent quest for Steampunk music -- Abney Park, Beats Antique, Circus Contraption, Rasputina -- and best of all, intriguing bands that I'd never heard before, such as Asylym Street Spankers, Eisley, Dandelion Junk Queens, The Legendary Shack Shakers.
Highly recommended, despite the rather inane banter in between sets. You can find them on iTunes or just listen from the web.
