So I had to work today, but it was a slow night, and I got off early.

But first... let me backtrack. Thursday, I was a bit sick in the morning, but I played some NWN and was feeling better in the afternoon. I drove down to Gene and Mike's place, and hung out there. We had lots of good food and watched Gosford Park, which I missed a lot of actually. I brought my laptop along all loaded up with the stories I've been working on lately, but never used it. But that's okay, it's ready to take down to my parent's house tomorrow, where hopefully I'll use it at least a little bit.

The original plan was to ride bikes to the park where we were going to watch the fireworks. I had no idea where this was, and I forgot my bike helmet and gloves, and also Virus, Shandower and Sheryl were without bikes, so everyone else rode off while we walked. It was actually about three miles, and I'm in no shape for that kind of hike. My lower calves have been aching for the last 24 hours.

Anyway, I thought the fireworks were pretty cool.

So my plan is to drive down to my parent's house this weekend. It's my birthday Sunday, and my nephew's birthday tood (well, we're one day apart). I needed to buy him a present, and was told he wanted something something Boy Genius games on dvd (computer games, or dvds? I was confused) and Yu-Gi-Oh game card packs.

Whatever.

And since I knew I missed my niece's birthday, I was going to get her something too. She's... I forget, four or maybe five now? She's young enough that I can buy her something now and she certainly won't hold it against me that I missed her birthday earlier. ^_^ And my other niece, who's a year and a half, I was going to get her something too.

My plan was to do all of that tomorrow, but I hit my comic shop on the way to work today, and although they had nothing in for me, it occured to me that they carry a lot of collectible card game stuff. So I asked about this Yu-Gi-Oh thing, and I spotted it on the shelf amost immediately.

Apparently this is the hot new game, from Japan (and based on some anime running in the US I think). My dealer said they're really hard to get ahold of right now. He had expansion 2 packs for $5, but the expansion 1 packs he had at $7.99, which is pretty outrageous but as he said, they're very hard to come by. I bought 2 of the first and 3 of the second expansion... over $30 for five little card packs. I hope my nephew appreciates them, he's not getting much else from me. ^_^

So that's some of my shopping done right there.

Incidentally, my mother refused to buy any Harry Potter lego sets (or Harry Potter anything else) for my nephew last Christmas, on the basis that Harry Potter dealt with magic and the occult and therefore was bad (she's not a raving lunatic about it, she didn't mind if I bought him the stuff for example, but she wasn't going to do it). But she bought him the Yu-Gi-Oh starter deck. Clearly she hasn't read anything about the evils of Yu-Gi-Oh, probably because it's not a worldwide best-selling phenomenom (yet), but this is a game that deals a lot with monsters, demons, magic, battles, etc. Typical fantasy stuff of course. I know she didn't examine the game too closely, and probably doesn't want to. Mind you, she never understood anything I was into when I was a kid. ^_^ Star Trek was "that weird show you guys watch that doesn't make any sense". ^_^

I deposited my check on the way to work. Paydays are nice. ^_^ But this is a rent payday, which is more than half my paycheck gone in one big bite, so I knew I had just a few hundred dollars left for the next two weeks.

I got to work fairly early, so I dropped by Fred Meyers. I wanted to get some jeans shorts, and I picked up a pair for $19, and also a pair of Docker-like shorts for $16. Then I saw some shoes on a rack right in front of the cashier that were on sale for 40% off the marked price (which was already marked down a little). These were Lugs, which are kind of a cross between tennis shoes and boots... they have a boot-like sole, and boot-like metal eyelets for the laces.

Naturally, the checkout lady spent more than five minutes trying to verify that they were really on sale. I mean, the sale stand is RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER, and all the other shoes on the stand were IDENTICAL to the ones I picked out, apart from size, but they didn't have a yellow highlight mark on the price so she had to summon her superior, who seemed pretty annoyed at having to explain that yes, they really were on sale.

And that was pretty much it for my day. Except that when I got home, I had two official-looking pieces of mail waiting for me. Official-looking, as in not just offering me new credit opportunities that I don't want or need. One was from my Providian Visa card, saying that they haven't recieved my payment (mailed two weeks ago, cleared my checking account over a week ago). I assume that the notice just came in late, but I probably shouldn't assume and call them to make sure everything's okay now.

The other was from Brian Volkert, who was the President of WOSCA, the company I used to work for that folded two years ago. He was sending me a final 401k investment distribution check, for $451.00.

Wow. Now that's a pretty nice birthday present. ^_^

So now I only have to figure out what that $451 represents. Is it a new mattress, which I desperately need? Is it the repairs for my car's air conditioning, which I would really really like done SOON? Or is it a bike, which I need if I want to get into shape and go on more biking trips with Sky, Mike, Virus, Gene, Jeff, etc.?

Hmmm... not knowing for certain is part of the fun. ^_^
