End of the week
So I spent most of the week building a Neverwinter Nights module. I'm doing it the stupid way... I'm building something so huge that I'll probably never finish it or have anything to show to my friends. But I hope I finish it because I have some fun stuff planned for it. I've been working through the pdf tutorial that you can get online, and that explains a lot, but not quite everything.
First of all, I wanted all of my quests to be weird or stupid. So the main quest is to stop an evil clown named Boozo and his evil mutant killer undead zombie clown posse, and to return the mojo that he stole from the circus ringleader.
I have another quest to find and return a curry machine. From the very begining of the adventure, your character is looking first and foremost for a good curry. I want to try and work the quest so that you have to get chicken meat, rice, and curry powder too, but I need to figure out how to do a multi-item quest.
Another multi-item quest that I want to try is to find several of the circus creatures and tell them to go home, or something. That one's not so weird or stupid, just a basic quest... but it's a trick to learn how to deal with a quest that has multiple goals that can be completed in any order you want.
I haven't figured out how to make signs work yet either. You need a script to make them talk I think... I know it's something simple, but the tutorial doesn't cover it.
Anyway, all of my side quests are really stupid or lame, on purpose. I want to do one where two guys each want you to get the item that the other borrowed from him and return it... I want to do another really simple stupid-easy quest where you have to get something across the room and return it to the quest giver, and he goes on and on and on about how wonderful it is that you managed to complete this quest. I have one quest I'm working on where you have to fight your way through multiple levels of nasty stuff just to deliver an insult to some wizard's brother.
Anyway I'm losing track of how many zones I have for this stupid module... that's most of what I've created so far, the zones and links. I can run through all of these territories and they all link up, but there's not much there yet. I have... let's see... the woods with the inn where you start the adventure, the inn has at least three levels (2nd floor and basement)... there's a short dungeon that leads to my main section, the Mirthwood Forest... I have two wizard towers with several levels to each of them and basements that connect to some crypts and lava pit dungeons and mines, and to the big evil mines, which are several levels and lead to the hidden atol where the main mob boss will be hiding in another tower... and a few side zones like houses and such to round everything out. Much too big for a first module, but I'm having fun creating away so I guess it keeps me entertained. ^_^ Maybe I'll actually finish it, who knows?
I finally got sick of modding Thursday, so instead I assembled two cds of pop rock music. I was originally going for a new wave bubblegum pop style, the sort of rock that Blondie used to make for example, but it was easier to include power pop and other new wave pop styles... anything that was bright and bouncy and that I really liked. So I wound up with two cds of Matthew Sweet, The Connells, B52's, Blondie, The Cars, Shonen Knife, Choir, Go Go's, Bangles, Darling Buds, Pure Joy, Posies, Presidents, Hoodoo Gurus, Smithereens... all really cool pop rock music. I even included Abba, which was pretty much my favorite band when I was a kid, so I've always been into good pop music I guess.
Anyway, those two cds are perfect for driving down the freeway on a hot summer day. I need to make a third, there are a lot of songs by Matthew Sweet, Connells, Shonen Knife, etc. that I love. I was thinking I need to include some of these songs on a cd to give to my friends too... but I also wanted to do a cd of songs celebrating the earth and life on earth, like "Earthshine" by Rush, which has a cool guiltar riff that sounds like a King's X song, and "Golden Age" by Midnight Oil (wow, a really positive song from Midnight Oil, imagine that!), and "Revolution Earth" by B52's... I think I can do a whole cd of cool songs on that theme. Even "Beautiful Day" by U2, which I'm sure everyone's heard but it really is one of the coolest songs U2 has done in years.
So that was my week, mostly. Wednesday Jeff and Jeri-Lynn came over (it was Wednesday wasn't it? Or Thursday). They got to see my new desks and bookshelves and computer room -- nobody else has seen them so far. And my new bike, which I haven't used yet. Then we went to Uwajamaya and wandered around a little before I had to go to work. I picked up a few more Tokyopop manga collections at the Kinokuniya bookstore there... Mars vol 2, Real Bout High School vol 2 (not sure I really needed that one), and Paradise Kiss vol 1 which is weird and fun and I should have lent it to Sky today but I forgot. I need to lend Sky Mars and a few other titles too I think.
And then today I hit my comic shop, and among other things picked up Planet Ladder vol 2 (haven't decided yet if I like this one), Chobits vol 2 (woo!), Love Hina vol 3, and GTO vol 3. Which annoyed me because I could've picked up vol 2 at Kinokuniya, but I thought it was on my list of things for my comic shop to order for me. Turns out nobody is ordering it, but he happened to have vol 3 on the shelves. Now I need to go get vol 2.
And several other comics... Books of Magic, Bone, Ah! My Goddess, and Ranma 1/2. And I picked up the newest Dirty Pair graphic novel from Adam Warren, "Run From The Future". I'm not a huge fan of the Dirty Pair as a whole (old or new versions) but I love Adam Warren's take on them.
And then it was Steam Punk gaming at Gene's place, which was fun. I downloaded pretty much Gene's entire steampunk campaign web site and set it up to run locally on my laptop, so I can go through the various journal/diary entries easier. And I took some notes so that maybe I can actually complete another Kid Rocket entry.
I wonder what I'll do tomorrow? ^_^
