Things I failed to buy
Dec. 12th, 2006 12:14 pmSometimes what's important is what you fail to do, rather than what you do. Especially if you fail to spend money, because like most people I know I tend to want to spend more money than I have, and our credit economy lets people do exactly that. Which is generally a bad thing as I'm sure we all know.
When I was in Chicago one of the things I did was order two memory chips for my laptop computer. I wasn't really certain I needed to be spending that money, and let's face it, the biggest reason for the memory upgrade was to allow the computer to run a game like Second Life better, which I need it to do for what? About five to ten days of the year?
I went ahead and did it. The place I ordered from wanted a phone number from the back of my credit card for verification purposes. My credit card had more than one phone number on the back, and I'd never been asked such a question before. Maybe because of that, my credit card was declined, even though it was a perfectly good credit card for any other purchase anywhere else. This company (which Adam had reccomended highly) also annoyed me by sending me up 8 e-mails per day announcing the declined status of my card. I went to their web site and verified the information they had, and changed the phone number, but nothing happened. Finally I changed the credit card to my other card that I don't like to use often. As it turned out, chaging any of the information they had did not result in them using the new information -- they continued to send me e-mails saying my credit card w as being declined, and they were still billing the old credit card (and apparently with the old information I'd given them originally). What a bunch of idiots.
Anyway, since I didn't really know if I'd really needed to buy the memory upgrades, I haven't reordered from anyone else. That's a chunk of money that I didn't need to spend, that I tried to spend, and failed to spend. ^_^
Also this fall I visited Hungry Tiger Press and saw that they had a new collection of the five Oz graphic novels by Eric Shanower which I love. Nothing new here == I own all five in the original published versions, but they're reprinted in one book with some minor corrections and whatnot. BUT! They had a special limited edition signed hardcover which included 70 pages of extra stuff -- art, comics, other things that Eric had done that related to Oz, illustrations for other Oz books, early versions of the comics, etc. I SOOOOOO wanted a copy of this. It was expensive (I think around $80) but since it was a limited edition I decided to snap it up before it was gone, even though I really couldn't justify the expense.
As it turned out, it already was gone. My purchase didn't go through, I got a note from them saying sorry, it was already sold out. Grrr! But of course, it was money I didn't really need to spend at the time. I'm still sad that I wasn't able to get a copy though.
