Dec. 13th, 2006 11:40 pmWe're having a white elephant gift exchange at work next week. The way we're doing it, it's okay to buy the gift, but generally the idea of a white elephant gift exchange is to get a gift that's oddball or silly in some way. In other words, don't sweat the details. Something like that. We do the type of exchange where someone can take an unopened present or "steal" one of the already opened presents if they think that'll be better. I usually hate those kind of gift exchanges because they can be horribly cruel, but last year exactly ONE person chose to "steal" a present, out of the entire office... and that was frankly boring. Everybody was too timid to steal someone else's gift. So, I dunno, I guess I'm wishy-washy about the whole idea, it's fun but can also be sadistic. Which can also be fun.
Anyway the odds are probably good that nobody will want to steal my present. What I did is drop by Silver Platters and pick a bunch of cds out of the $1 bargain bin. We're supposed to keep it to $15.00 or under, and I might have gone over just a bit because I bought a Christmas cd for $3.98 (none of those for $1 this time of year) but I thought that at least whoever got my present could have a Christmas cd to listen to, if they didn't like anything else I had to offer. I tried to pick out stuff that people would recognize, either artists people would recognize, or cds that had hit songs on them of some sort, but I also tried to get a variety so I grabbed some things I wasn't necessarily familiar with.
1. Kenny G -- Miracles The Holiday Album (Christmas cd)
2. Van Halen -- OU812 (80's Metal)
3. Yanni -- Dare to Dream (New Age artist that practically everyone knows by name)
4. Backstreet Boys -- Backstreet Boys (90's boy band)
5. Kane & Abel -- Most Wanted (looks like a rap cd with parental advisory explicit content)
6. Wilson Phillips -- Wilson Phillips (early 90's pop group, this is the one with all of their hit songs)
7. Spin Doctors -- Pocket Full of Kryptonite (funky 90's alternative -- includes Two Princes, Little Miss Can't Be Wrong, and Jimmy Olsen Blues)
8. Chumbawamba -- Tubthumper (90's alternative, their only hit ever was the silly Tubthumping, remember "I get knocked down, but I get up again..."?)
9. James Taylor Curtis -- James Taylor Curtis (a country singer of some kind, includes Country As Can Be, Looking For A Honky Tonk Angel and Are You Listening Uncle Sam?)
10. 10,000 Maniacs -- Our Time In Eden (literate alt rock. Actually, this is my favorite cd of theirs. Includes Candy Everybody Wants, These Are Days, Noah's Dove, and Stocton Gala Days)
11. Limp Bizkit -- Significant Other (late 90's Rap-Metal/Nu-Metal cheese)
12. PM Dawn -- Of The Heart, Of The Soul, And Of The Cross: The Utopian Experience (um... beyond rap, beyond jazz, I suppose. They're a cool band really.)
13. Collective Soul -- Collective Soul (90's alt rock band, their 2nd and best cd, with Simple, Smashing Young Man, Where The River Flows, Gel, Bleed, etc.)
14. Cher -- Love Hurts (well... it's Cher)
15. Stryper -- In God We Trust (because we needed some cheesy Christian 80's hair metal)
I think I probably have something for everyone here... and a lot of other stuff most people wouldn't want. ^_^
