...which is a thinly disguised cry for help from Mike, or possibly Jeff or anyone else who might have a clue (which I apparently don't).

Travelled further down the path of migrating my old 200mhz machine to a different (larger) box. Along the way I discovered I had two Netgear net cards installed in this machine. Hmm. Well, whatever.

An important step in migrating my computer here is taking the Maxtor 8.5 gig slave drive out, slaving it to another machine, transfering whatever I need to transfer off of it, and then I can format over it and use it as the primarly drive for my old 200mhz machine. My old machine died because of the master drive, so I shouldn't have any issues with the Maxtor slave drive.

1. I have verified that the jumpers are set correctly for it to be a slave. It was the slave drive in my old machine, so it's not the drive that died as far as I know.

2. I have hooked up power and the cable correctly for it to be a slave to the 40 gig Samsung drive in my new computer ("Neon Lotus").

3. Startup recognizes that there is a primary slave drive. BIOS sees it and has all the information on it.

4. Win98 does not see the drive.

5. The suggestion on the Maxtor web site was that this happens when you're installing a new drive and haven't formatted it yet. Well, I have an OLD drive and I don't want to format it yet -- I want to see what's on it first. But maybe there's a problem with the drive, and I have no choice but to format over it?

I don't think there was anything especially important on the drive... it was a backup drive on a backup computer. But I'd rather look and see what's there.

Any suggestions? Maybe I'm missing something really obvious?

I left a message at the Maxtor site. They may respond with an answer.

Otherwise, picked up my new FSB cds today, and I've been having fun listening to them.
