Today's song: Ace of Spades by Hayseed Dixie

Anyone who knows me probably knows that I love discovering odd song covers -- such as the all-cello cover and the bluegrass cover of a Metallica song that I posted yesterday. Thus, we have Hayseed Dixie, which started out life as a one-off joke hillbilly AC/DC cover band. I picked up their first cd and laughed at it. It was played for laughs, although to be honest they're pretty darn good bluegrass musicians. I liked it, but I had no intention of ever picking anything else up by them.

Fast forward a few years, and Hayseed Dixie is still very much in business, having now released a half dozen cds. They are covering other bands besides AC/DC, playing their own compositions, and touring Europe (they are apparently very popular in Brittain). A couple of weeks ago I ordered a dvd of theirs off of Ebay for cheap, and I enjoyed seeing them live in concert.

One of their best songs is their cover of Motorhead's Ace of Spades. Hayseed did a nice video of their Ace of Spades cover, and the live version on the dvd is electric, with people in the crowd going wild and singing along -- you can tell this is one of their fan favorites. Oddly, it's not listed as one of their popular download on iTunes, but it should be. But don't take my word for it... there are no less than four other live videos of their take of the song on You Tube:

Hayseed Dixie live - Ace of Spades
also Hayseed Dixie live - Ace of Spades
another live cover of the song by HD
yet another live HD cover of Ace of Spades

Frankly, the song works really well as a rip 'em up bluegrass tune. And Hayseed Dixie must be on to something because they're not alone -- the song apparently works just as well as a full-blown honky-tonk country tune. Check out this Hetten Des cover. No, I don't know who they are, but it works.

As for buying another Hayseed Dixie cd... I still don't think I will. But I couldn't get this tune out of my head, so I bought it off of iTunes. It's nice to be able to do that, buy just one song when you don't want to spend more.

And I should issue a warning to [livejournal.com profile] genebreshears... apparently Hayseed Dixie's newest cd, due out in May, contains a cover of I Don't Feel Like Dancing by the Scissor Sisters... so I guess no band is safe from these boys! (Heck, they've covered rap group Outkast as well...)
