Today's Song: Hold On, Hold On by Neko Case
Neko Case is a local musician -- sort of. She's lived in Vancouver, BC and Seattle, WA but I think she lives in Chicago now, but maybe not. She seems to move around a lot. Well, anyway, that's not important. Her music is often described as "alternative country", a label she apparently doesn't like much, so let's just say she's an independant singer/songwriter with a lot of folk and country influences.
I picked up her cd last year, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. A couple of tracks grabbed me immediately. "The Needle Has Landed" is a cool track with a reference to Spanaway, which makes me wonder if "the needle" is a reference to the Space Needle. But anyway, the best song on the cd is, in my opinion, "Hold On, Hold On": Haunting melody, haunting lyrics, and Neko's haunting voice. She's sometimes compared to Patsy Kline which I think is a fair comparison. This song is also her most popular download from iTunes, so I'm not the only one that likes it:
The most tender place in my heart is for strangers
I know it's unkind but my own blood is much too dangerous
Hangin' round the ceiling half the time
Hangin' round the ceiling half the time
Compared to some I've been around
But I really tried so hard
That echo chorus lied to me with it's
"Hold on, hold on, hold on,"
In the end I was the mean girl
Or somebody's in-between girl
Now it's the devil I love
And that's as funny as real love
You can listen to this song on her web site, linked above. or here's a video on youtube of her singing the song. Here's another live video with worse sound quality but still pretty good, and it contains some joking at the begining that's a lot of fun. ^_^
Don't have much ele to say. It's Friday. It's payday. This is a sad payday because my check is 3 days short because of Norwescon, and I have to pay my rent out of it -- in fact my entire paycheck will barely cover my rent this time around. Next payday is a happy payday because I'll get my yearly bonus check -- my company pays you your vacation money up front on the anniversary of your hire -- but I have to make it through the next two weeks with little money first. ^_^
