Today's Song: Foxy Lady by Harry Manx
Harry Manx is an artist who blends blues and folk with Hindistani classical music. He plays an instrument known as a Mohan veena, which is a modified slide guitar with 20 strings designed to incorporate a sitar-like sound. He lived in India for five years, styding under Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, the creator of the Mohan veena. He now lives in British Columbia.
As you might imagine if you know me, the idea of mixing American blues with Indian ragas was too intriguing to pass up. I ordered a Harry Manx cd last Fall. I enjoy his sound a great deal. His take on Jimi Hendrix's Foxy Lady is as bluesy as the original, but very foreign sounding at the same time. I love that kind of thing in a cover song. ^_^
You can hear some of his music on his web site, and there's a Harry Manx myspace page as well.
As usual I picked a song I like a lot, and thus I don't actually have a link to point you to where you can listen to it all the way through. But apart from what you can hear above, here's some Harry Manx goodness on Youtube: Bring That Thing
