Today's Song: Rumba Argelina by Radio Tarifa

Radio Tarifa takes it's name from the Cape Tarifa region in Southern Spain, the closest point to North Africa. The idea behind the band is that a radio that could be heard in both Spain and Africa ought to incorporate the best of both worlds -- and thus their music combines Spanish and Arabic influences, and also looks backwards to a past that might have been, if Spanish and Arabic culture had comingled more.

Something like that anyway. Their web site describes the first cd as comprising "an eclectic work with Arab, Oriental, German Medieval, old Andalucian, Sefardic, Sanabrian music and some themes composed by Fain with lyrics written by Benjamin Escoriza. This first CD included also Flamenco and Andalucian Folk songs".

I own two of their cds. Rumba Argelina is my favorite tune of theirs. The video link there is to an instrumental version with guest Asian musicians (very cool sounding); the radio version with vocals can be heard on thier Myspace page
