I've been listening to Undertow by Lush lately. I think I started listening to it again because NPR's Day to Day sometimes uses the intro portion of the song as bumper music in between news segments. Anyway I wanted to reccomend it as a song of the day, but as it turns out not all of Lush's cds are available on iTunes, only their first early EP and a greatest hits colleciton.
I have a lot of favorite Lush tunes though, and Hypocrite is one of them. So that's my song of the day.
Undertow is a song about saving someone from depression:

Written by Miki Berenyi, I've always thought (in hindsight) that it may have been written about the drummer, Chrus Aclund, who hung himself at his parent's house in 1996. The band Lush was unable to go on afterwards, and broke up. I was always quite disappointed in that; they were one of my favorite bands. However, I've just discovered (through my research for this post) that Emma Anderson went on to form a band called Sing-Sing with vocalist Lisa O'Neil. I'm listening to some of their tracks on iTunes now and I can say that I need to download some, buy their cds, and maybe make one of their songs a future song of the day. ^_^
Lush were one of the best of the 4AD bands (my opinion) and were labelled a "shoegazer" band from the get-go. Whatever. I just wish I had more cds of their to listen to, they only managed 4 before it was all over. I love all their stuff, from the early Cocteau Twins-influenced hazy fuzzy sugar-drenched sound to their later harder-edged pop. It was all good.
