75 song in 8 Hours

When I started subscribing to podcasts about a week and a half ago, I signed up for three song-a-day feeds. One of them, KEXP's Song of the Day, had a lot of previous songs available. Their podcasts are just the song itself, nothing added, for free. Some of their songs are exclusive recordings at their own studio and that sort of thing.

At first I looked through their list for any artist I recognized and might want to grab. Then I began to think in a paranoid manner. What if there's a song that I'll wind up liking, but it's about to be removed? They must add a new song every day and remove another. How did I know which one was about to be removed, and if I'd like it or not?

So like a fool, I downloaded every single song they had available. That was over 70 songs.

Then I didn't listen to them right away. Oh, I listened to a couple, but there were so many other things to listen to. Regular NPR Radio. Podcasts of shows I liked. Music that I was already familiar with. Music that I was assembling for some of my new playlist ideas (like the one for Valentine that I did over the weekend).

And every day, iTunes was downloading new songs. Three a day. Except that since I hadn't listened to all of those others, the total number of podcasts I had yet to listen to was 80+. It was kind of intimidating. and I wasn't sure when I'd listen to all of that strange music.

So that was today's goal, listen to as much of my list of random music as I could, and take notes on whether I liked each song or not. These were mostly snap-judgement decisions since I was working with the music in the background, but for good or ill, I made some kind of decision on each song. Mostly I knew what songs caught my ear on first listen and what songs annoyed me immediately. Since I took notes I feel as if I should blog about it, so here we go:

Man In Grey - Sleeping: It's okay.
The Grey Race - On The Chin: I like this one.
Laura Veirs - Cast A Hook In Me: A+++!!!! But I like her already.
Mew - Am I Wry? No: Not bad.
Sean Hayes - All For Love: Eh, didn't do too much for me. Might grow on me though.
Lymbic System - Love Your Abuser: Blah. Didn't like.
Data Rock - Fa Fa Fa: I've heard of them before, they're a geek rock band. But I can't say this interested me that much.
The Virgins - Rich Girl: Hated it.
Great Northern - Telling Lies: I liked this one!
Fields - Charming the Flames: I liked this too!
Karen Ann - Lay Your Head Down: Moderately likeable.
Cat-A-Tac - We're All Gone: Liked this.
Harrisons - Dear Conastable: I ranked this as moderately interesting.
Pela - Lost tothe Lonesome: Somewhat interesting.
Dappled Cities - Beach Song: Eh.
Cloud Cult - Pretty Voice: More Eh.
Battles - Atlas: ICK! YUCK! Did not like a great deal.
Modest Mouse - Invisible: Modest Mouse is a popular and critically acclaimed band, but the more I hear from them the more annoying they become. I don't know what it is, something about them I dislike a lot.
Parts & Labor - The Gold We're Digging: Eh.
The Avett Brothers - Shame: More Eh.
Cloud Cult - Your 8th Birthday: Even more Eh.
Page France - The Ruby Ring Man: I liked this!
Sea Wolf - You're A Wolf: Another good track!
David Vandervelde - Jacket: Liked this too.
Rufus Wainwright - Going to a Town: I like this, of course. He's good.
Spoon - The Ghost of You Lingers: Bleh.
Das Llamas - Wood on Bone: Moderately dislikeable.
Los Campesinos! - You! Me! Dancing!: This song is lots of fun!
Great Northern - Home: I liked this a lot. I can tell I like this band!
Maps - To The Sky: Moderately likeable.
Peel - Moxey Blues: Eh.
!!! - Must Be The Moon: Disliked this a lot.
The DTs - Freedom: Very good!
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - The Unwanted Things: Eh.
Future Clouds & Radar - Hurricane Judy: Moderately Eh, likeable enough.
Bright Eyes - Four Winds: Moderately likeable.
Junior Boys - Like A Child: Did not like this at all.
Peter Bjorn and John - Let's Call It Off: Eh, somewhat likeable.
Plus / Minus - Fadeout: Moderately likeable.
Low Frequency in Stereo - Jimmy Legs: Eh.
David Vandervelde - Nothin' No: Eh.
Motor - Bleep: Eh.
Junior Boys - In the Morning: Disliked this. I don't like this band at all.
A Sunny Day in Glasgow: Eh.
Brown Recluse Sings - Lazy Bones: Eh.
Besnard Lakes - For Agent 13: Did not like.
Working For A Nuclear Free City - Troubled Son: Eh.
Fujiya & Miyagi - Cassettesong: Pleasant enough electronica, not really my thing but okay.
The Boggs - Forts: This one rocked! One of my favorites on first listen.
Low Vs. Diamond - Stay Awake: Also very good!
The Earaches - Not the Kind of Man I Am: Also a good one.
Panda Bear - Comfy In Nautica: Love the band name, love the song title. I wanted to like the song, but it was not only repetetive and monotonous, but it went on for twelve and a half minutes! GAH!
The Greyboy Allstars - Still Waiting: This was okay.
Wax Tailor - We Be: Had some interesting lyrics but then they repeated them over and over, and I lost interest. No good.
Low - Breaker: Also didn't like this one.
Rosebuds - Get Up, Get Out: Liked this!
Deerhunter - Stage Lights: Eh.
Andrew Bird - Heretics: More Eh.
Arcade Fire - Black Mirror: This was more interesting.
Under Byen - Palads: I liked this!
Pacha Massive - Pachangueando: Now this was fun at first but by the end I was getting tired of it.
Junior Boys - Under the Sun: Third song by these guys that I really disliked. Make them go away!
Grizzley Bear - Knife: Another one I didn't like at all.
!!! - Heart of Hearts: THIS SONG SUCKS! And what's with their name, is this Woodstock's favorite band? (I mean the bird, of course). Actually listening to this a 2nd time, it's not really bad at all, I think I just got annoyed at how repetetive it gets.
Apostle of Hustle - My Sword Hand's Anger: Eh.
The Airbourne Toxic Event - Does This mean You're Moving On?: Eh.
The Early Years - All Ones And Zeroes: I marked this as "Eh" but actually I remember thinking the lyrics were pretty stupid and repetetive and annoying. I think I liked the music though.
Fujiya & Miyagi - Conductor 71: Another nice instrumental electronica tune. These guys aren't bad.
Okkervil River - The President's Dead: Ick. Didn't like at all.
Peter Bjorn & John - The Objects of My Affection: Annoying. Didn't like.
Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea: Another song that started out with promise and then grew progressively more annoying.
Ollie Bird - Chaka Khan: Interesting at first, but ultimately unlikeable.
Halou - Honeythief: Oh yeah! Now this is a cool tune! Liked this a lot!
dEUS - 7 Days, 7 Weeks: Well-written lyrics. Very smooth. I liked this.

That's my take! Now to delete all the ones I didn't like!
