Saturday: Played Everquest.

Sunday: Played Everquest.

Monday: Played Everquest.

Well... actually didn't play that much Saturday, but I played a lot Sunday and Monday. I was supposed to go to that CS Lan Party thing on Monday, but I figured I'd be arriving late and anyway [livejournal.com profile] miertam and [livejournal.com profile] sora_kitsune probably weren't going to be there, and I really just wanted to stay home and play EQ so I did.

Made some stew Sunday night, that I let cook overnight. That was another incentive to be lazy on Monday.

Tom and Kim dropped by again very late Monday. I was in the middle of an EQ disaster. Which I suppose I'll hid behind this here link.

Someone had given my little rogue on Fironia Vie (the roleplay server) a velium (magic) rapier and a velium scimitar. After a marathon session in Lavastorm with some other people I was a hair from 13th level. So I worked hard until I got to 13th level, at which point I could dual wield my new weapons, then I headed out to hunt wisps. You need magic weapons to kill wisps, but they drop things called greater light stones that can be turned into big cash via a gypsy quest.

So I hunted wisps all day. They don't drop greater light stones very often, but in the end I had eight light stones.

Some of the gypsies that do this quest can be found in North Karana. Long ago, those were the only ones I knew of, but North Karana is a long ways away and is a very dangerous zone for a low level character like me. Lots of griffons and hill giants about, and highland lions. But you can do the same quest with the gypsies in Oasis, and also with the dark elf gypsies in the Southern Desert of Ro. South Ro is also a dangerous place to go... giants, nasty undead about... actually Oasis isn't entirely safe, there's giants and undead there too, just ont quite as much so it's safer than the other two. Luckily for me, I'm a rogue, so even though I'm a dark elf, I can sneak behind merchants who don't like me, and then they will sell to me. ^_^

So I went to Oasis and traded in all my greater lightstones, and came away with about 75 platinum. The quest gives good experience too, enough to bump me to 14th level. Woo! ^_^

After that I went back home to the dark elf city.

One of my goals was to get better armor. I bought some banded leggings (pants), arms, and a banded tunic from various merchants. Buying from merchants is expensive, it's better to buy from players, but I couldn't find any blacksmiths about. And one of the hindrances on Fironia Vie is that there is no "common" tongue, so you can't understand anyone else unless they speak Dark Elf or unless you learn their language.

So after that I still had money, and I decided to travel to the bazaar. It sounded like a cool place, where players can set themselves up as merchants and you can buy from other players easily. It's on the moon, and the only way to get there is via one of five gates. The nearest gates to me were in North Karana (as I said, a long trip and dangerous) and in Greater Faydark (home of the high elves and the wood elves, who are my natural enemies).

But I decided to take the boat to Faydwer and then travel to Faydark. It wasn't necessarily any quicker, but I thought it would be an interesting trip.

So I wandered down to Freeport and waited for the boat.

One of the big advantages that I have as a rogue is that I can hide and sneak. Hiding makes you invisible to just about everyone. Sneaking allows me to move about and remain hidden (and also makes everyone who is not looking directly at me consider me "indifferent", which is how it allows me to buy from merchants who dislike me).

The only problem is that when you zone (enter a new zone), you are no longer hiden or sneaking.

So the boat travels into a new zone, the Ocean of Tears. And I'm running around on the boat like I normally do. And it docks at Sisters Isle, home of an order of goody-goody wood elves. I know they probably don't like me... I'm not actually certain, since my rogue is agnostic, but in general they don't like dark elves, and for that matter a lot of dark elves travel to the island just to kill wood elves.

But I had always thought that, if I remained on the boat, everyone on shore would consider me indifferent.

I found out quickly how wrong I was. There was a wood elf npc standing on the end of the dock, and she immediately ran onto the boat and attacked me. I'd been trying to hide and sneak as the boat came in, but I tried to hide first, and since the boat is moving (and me with it) I immediately moved and stopped hiding. This problem is solved if I sneak first, of course... but my second hide attempt failed, and then I was at the dock and got attacked.

I knew I was going to die... the wood elf was much too powerful. So I ran onto the dock and died there. I was afraid that the boat might carry my corpse off and lose it at sea somewhere... that used to happen, but I guess it's fixed now. More on that in a moment.

I respawned back in Nektulos, just outside the dark elf city of Neriak. I ran back to Freeport. I got on the next boat. Along the way, I realize that I'm thirsty and have no food or drink, but I can't buy any because I also have no money.

We get to Sisters Isle. I remember to hide and sneak this time. I summon my corpse onto the boat. The boat starts moving again, and suddenly I can't loot my corpse... as it turns out, it doesn't move with the boat anymore.

So... I ride the boat all the way to Butcherblock, then all the way back to Freeport, then back to Sisters Isle. This is a round trip of about 40 minutes real time. This is why people who play Everquest hate the boats and never take them.

By now I'm REALLY thirsty and hungry. The game keeps reminding me of that fact.

Sigh. So this time, hiding and sneaking, I summon my corpse (which is in the water just off the dock) and drag it onto the island, then drag it to a remote location where I can loot it out of sight of any nasty wood elves.

Then, having finally recovered my stuff after more than an hour of running around, I sneaked back to the dock and waited for the next boat. There's two boats, so one comes by every twenty minutes.

This is about the time Tom and Kim showed up. They got to watch me play, since I couldn't just shut down in hostile territory.

Boat comes. I travel to Butcherblock, the home of the dwarves. I hide and sneak my way off the boat, and Kim (who plays dwarves a LOT) shows me her secret back way around Kaladim (dwarf city) to Greater Faydark.

FINALLY I get to Greater Faydark, make my way to the wizard spires, and after a few minutes wait, viola! I'm on the moon.

The bazaar was very cool. You can use a variety of filers to sort through all of the things people are selling... for example, I wanted a better off-hand weapon, since the velium scimitar is a slashing weapon and as a rogue I'm much more partial to piercing weapons (I have a 70 skill in piercing, and about 5 in slashing). So I set the filters for "rogue" "dark elf" and "piercing" and it gave me a list of all the piercing weapons that were for sale. Right-clicking on the weapon allowed me to look at it's stats; prices were displayed next to the name of the item, and the seller's name came last. Right-clicking on the seller's name pointed me in their direction... and then you just go find them and buy the item off of them. The players who are selling are all standing around, AFK (Away From Keyboard), and it's just like dealing with an npc merchant. Very slick... the old way was people would stand about auctioning what they had for what prices, and it was just a madhouse.

So I bought a new weapon and some armor and jewelry. Kim showed me how it all worked. I patched to the Test Server and tried it out with my shaman Jalia... bought some more armor (Jaundiced Bone Vambraces! Woo! There goes all my money! Time to kill more giants I guess!). Then we logged EQ off and watched some anime.

And that was pretty much my weekend. ^_^
