[Poll #63622]
First of all... if you think anyone should be embarassed to own the greatest hits of ABBA, then you got another think coming, because ABBA is one of the coolest pop groups there ever was. ^_^ Although I won't try to convince you that their lyrics were deep or meaningful or in any way signifigant, because I'd just look stupid. But nobody gets to trash ABBA in my live journal!
Also saying that I should be embarassed to own a Toto cd is iffy at best. And I say this because I bought the greatest hits of Toto earlier tonight.
For my money, owning Eddie Grant is the true embarassment, although Mr. Roboto is a close second.
Earlier in the week, Laura at work bought some cds to listen to while she billed. These included a Frank Sinatra collection (she calls him "old silver tongue" instead of "old blue eyes"), a Stray Cats collection, a Lynyrd Skynyrd collection, and a Styx collection.
She lent me the Styx collection, which was all live versions of some of their biggest hits. The cd did not include Mr. Roboto, which is a big bonus in my book. For me, Styx started out as a very cool band, and The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight are cool cds. And then they got progressively stupider, until they put out that ode to a Japanese robot, which is so far removed from a song like "Fooling Yourself" in terms of coolness that it's hard to believe the same band did both songs.
So anyway, I started thinking about Styx and all of these other arena rock groups that I used to listen to when I was young, and I decided to put together a compilation cd of some of the better songs from these various groups. I figured I should include Journey, Foreigner, Jefferson Starship, Boston, Asia, Queen, Kansas, and maybe Toto, Survivor, ELO, Genesis, maybe even some Steely Dan, just because I want an excuse to put "Do It Again" on a compilation cd.
The problem was, while I own nearly all of this stuff on vinyl, I don't own very much of it on cd, because I don't listen to this old music very often. I had the Greatest Hits of Journey, Greatest Hits of Genesis, the "Winds of Change" cd by Jefferson Starship (because "Winds of Change" is a cool song that never gets put on their best of collections), "Pieces of Eight" by Styx, the first two Boston cds, various ELO cds, and as for Queen, I had the "Classic Queen" cd (which includes Bohemian Rhapsody and Under Pressure) but not the "Greatest Hits" cd that is the companion to "Classic Queen". And I also had their "A Kind of Magic" cd because it has "Princes of the Universe" on it, which is the way-cool opening theme from the Highlander tv series. For some reason, this song does not appear on "Greatest Hits" or "Classic Queen".
And while I'm at it, let me add that the so-called "Greatest Hits" cd contains a number of songs that were not big hits, while "Classic Queen" contains, as I said, songs like Bohemian Rhapsody and Under Pressure which were surely some of Queen's bigger hits -- it's an obvious ploy to get you to buy two cds instead of one. But in this case, since it's Queen, it's not really a bad thing. You can't have too much Queen. ^_^
So! Thursday I picked up a double-cd greatest hits collection covering the entire career of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Just Plain Starship. Everything from "Somebody to Love" to "We Built This City" and "Sara". It's a pretty cool collection, even if it doesn't include "Winds of Change" which I think it should. But I got that already, so I'm happy now. I got all the Airplane/Starship I think I need.
I also picked up the Greatest Hits of Queen, which I really should have had in my collection already. And I got the Best of Kansas, which is not exactly the best of -- I can think of at least one minor hit ("People of the South Wind") that should be incuded. But it's got "Carry On, Wayward Son", "Point of Know Return" and "Dust in the Wind" and those are the major ones you'd want. And again, I really should have owned some Kansas on cd already.
And I got the first CD by Asia, the one with "Heat of the Moment", "Time Will Tell" and "Sole Survivor". Their second cd contained a hit I liked, "Don't Cry", but beyond that I'm not sure there's any reason for anyone to own anything else by this band. To me, they're just barely a notch above Toto and two notches above Survivor as far as arena rock goes.
Somehow in all of this I forgot about Styx, the band that inspired me to grab some 70's/80's rock and make a compilation cd in the first place. So I went back today and bought "The Grand Illusion" which is surely the best of Styx's cds. (And I don't need a greatest hits now -- so I can avoid owning Mr. Roboto). I also picked up the best of Foreigner, and yes, the best of Toto.
Laura made fun of me for buying a Toto cd. I can't decide if I should be embarassed about it or not. Really, "Africa" is a cool song, and "Hold the Line" and "Rosanna" are tolerable. And I remember when "99" was popular, although I can't see why. And then I listened to the cd, and also remembered that "Georgie Porgie" was once a popular song. I REALLY did not need to ever remember that song again, much less own it on cd. I'd completely forgotten about it over the years, and now all the pain and hurting has returned.
And I'm even contemplating buying a Survivor cd, just for my little compilation here. There may be no hope for me.
I DO need to get some Steeley Dan on cd. That's a hole in my music collection that definitely needs to be filled.
For that matter, I own four ELO cds and I still don't own "Face The Music", which contains such wonderful songs as "Evil Woman" "Fire On High" and... some other song that I foreget. "Strange Magic", that's it.
And so, with Laura teasing me, I began to wonder what I would really be embarassed to own. And I thought of the Bee Gees, but to be honest I like some of their stuff. And I thought of Air Supply... well, I don't really like them at all. And I thought of various one-hit wonder disco outfits, like Anita Ward (Ring My Bell), A Taste of Honey (Boogie Oogie Ooogie) and the like. It might be embarassing to own some of that -- but I DO own a disco collection, "The Disco Years Vol 3", soley because it contains "Knock On Wood" by Amii Stewart, which is a truly kick-ass song, disco or not. There's also "Get Off" by Foxy on that collection, which is amusing enough... and a bunch of other mostly very forgetable disco music.
I even own the "Best of the Bubblegum Years" collection, and I'm not afraid to admit it. Yummy Yummy and A Little Bit of Soul are fun songs.
So then I thought of Mr. Roboto by Styx. I'd be quite embarassed to own that. But even moreso, I think I'd have to shoot myself if I ever knowingly owned a copy of "Electric Avenue" by Eddie Grant. I could never stand that song.
So there's why I made these two polls. ^_^
