Song of the Day: 1,000 In the Eastland by Pentagram
Pentagram, as I've pointed out before, is a heavy metal band from Turkey, also known as Mezarkabul outside of Turkey. I've been listening to this song for a while and since it's a free download from their web site (linked above) I decided to make it my song of the day. It's not only a cool metal song with some very nifty Middle-Eastern melodies and influences, it's also an appropriate song for present times -- it speaks about warfare in Eastern Turkey between the government and rebel groups (specifically the PKK, I believe). Thousands of people died in fighting in the 1990's. In fact, their album booklet is filled with graphic photos of dead people from that time. In fact, a member of the band was killed in this fighting. As you might imagine, the band's take on the whole thing is that war is stupid, pointless, and destructive and accomplishes nothing:
Meaningless war, no one can leave it
Why do they leave on the people bleeding
Hiding this truth we kill the peace man
Pray for these thousands in the Eastland
Lie on the ground I'll still be thinking
How they accept this life in true sin
Unreal's the peace, that we still believe in
I hear this sound of madness growing
Fighting with hatred feeds the rich men
Pray for these thousands in the Eastland
