Today's Song: My Kantele by Amorphis
Finland is chock full of the coolest bands on Earth, not the least of which is Amorphis, a band that incorporates so many other styles into their music that it's hard to really say what actual genre they belong to. In theory they are a death metal band, and especially on their early albums they use quite a bit of that style of vocals -- but they venture into folk music, progressive metal, electronica, all kinds of stuff, and later albums have included a lot of "clean" vocals. They're a fascinating band. I still don't own any of their cds, but I really do need to pick some of them up. I have, however, been downloading songs from eMuisc from all over their catelog: The Smoke and House of Sleep from The Eclipse, Higher Ground from Far From the Sun, Black Winter Day from Tales From the Thousand Lakes, and My Kantele from Elegy. The original version of My Kantele is a heavy metal song with death metal vocals, but also with folk instruments and melody added. Here on Youtube they have an acoustic version with clean vocals, which should be easier for people to appreciate (assuming you're not a big fan of death metal vocals anyway). It's a cool little tune. ^_^
