Today's Song: The Coventry Carol by Allison Moyet
The A Very Special Christmas cds are truly a mixed bag. (I suppose that's often true of song collections). The first cd in the series contains such lowlights as Christmas In Hollis by Run-DMC, Back Door Santa by Bon Jovi, and a version of Santa Baby by Madonna that in no way comes close to Eartha Kitt's version. Of course, some people on iTunes list those songs as highlights... as well, people say that John Mellencamp's very good cover of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus or U2's very good cover of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) are the highlights of the cd. Others point to Bruce Springstein's Merry Christmas Baby (eh... I'll pass, thanks) or to a good cover of The Little Drummer Boy by Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band, or to the admittedly very good cover of Silent Night by Stevie Nicks.
All of which goes to prove that the cd has something for everybody but probably is too diverse to please most people overall. For me, the highlights are Sting's marvelous Gabriel's Message, a fantastic cover of Winter Wonderland by the Eurythmics, and a stunning cover of The Coventry Carol by Allison Moyet. Hers is probably the definitive version for me -- even Loreena McKennitt's version does not measure up to my ears, and I love Loreena McKennitt. But then, this is one of those Christmas carols that I like quite a bit, so I don't mind having many versions of it.
