Today's Song: In The Bleak Midwinter by Chrissy Hynde and the Blind Boys of Alabama
I forgot to do a song of the day on Christmas, so it's backdating time once again! Which is okay because you're allowed to keep playing Christmas music until at least New Year's Day. I'm even still buying new Christmas music -- case in point: I just bought two versions of the hymn In the Bleak Midwinter, including the above version.
For Christmas music I tend to favor the more obscure hymns and songs. Some of them are quite beautiful, and while I'm sure Away In A Manger or Hark! The Herald Angels Sing are beautiful too, I've heard them plenty of times. (I suppose one could make an exception for Silent Night and O Holy Night which I don't really get tired of). Anyway, songs like the Coventry Carol, The Cherry Tree Carol, Gabriel's Message, and In the Bleak Midwinter are among my favorites. And it occured to me that I just didn't have a truly difinitive version of this particular song, so I checked out iTunes, and downloaded the version by Chrissy Hynde and the Blind Boys of Alabama, as well as a version by Shawn Colvin. There were some nice-sounding versions by James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, and Sarah MacLaughlin as well. Oh, and Steeleye Span too!
I suppose some of my favorite Christmas songs are a little melancholy in some way. ^_^
