Today's Song: Carnival by 12 Girls Band
This is from one of the cds I got through the BMG Music Club this Fall. The 12 Girls Band is a group of thirteen Chinese women musicians, all classically trained, who play modern music (about half original compositions and half covers of Western music) on traditional Chinese instruments. Only twelve of them appear on stage at any one time. Twelve is a significant number in Chinese culture; according to Wikipedia "Per Chinese mythology it is the twelve jinchai (12 hairpins) representing womanhood."
The band was assembled by Wang Xiao-Jing and the women were chosen from several thousand applicants.
The cd I have is Shanghai, their most recent release from 2007. Included on it are covers of Sting's Fragile, Bach's 1st Movement from the Concerto for Violin in A Minor, the classic jazz tune Take Five, and (perhaps inevitably) My Hear Will Go On, the Theme from the Titanic.
Their music is a bit like the Chinese version of a large string band. It's pleasant a pleasant mix of Chinese folk/world music with a very modern/pop feel to it.
Carnival, one of their original compositions, is the fourth track on the cd.
