Today's Song: CariƱito by Los Hijos del Sol

This comes from a collection that I got for Christmas from Chuck: The Roots of Chicha - Psychedelic Cumbias from Peru. This, as it turns out, is the first cd of this kind of music sold outside of Peru. Chicha is a Peruvian style of music that borrows from American and British rock and roll, Cuban rhythms, and various Peruvian and South American music styles including Peruvian/Andean Native folk melodies. It mixes a lot of things together to create a type of party music that is popular among the poor and disenfranchised and therefore has always been looked down on in Peruvian society. Kind of like blues, jazz, reggae, and any number of other new styles.

The music on this cd comes from 1968 - 1978 and includes some of the earliest and biggest names in Chica music. It's a fun style of music. You can hear the familiar Cuban rhythms, you hear the moog synthesizer and surf guitars of 60's rock, you hear the Peruvian/Andean melodies (if you're familiar with them -- I have a handful of cds of such music), and you can hear a lot of other Latin influences. Fun stuff.

Here's an NPR story on this particular cd.

The song I've chosen was picked purely because I could find a video of it on Youtube:

CariƱito (Angel Anibal Rosado) by Los Hijos del Sol

Here are a few of the other bands on the cd:

Los Mirlos - El Milargro Verde This song is also on the cd.

Juaneco y su Combo is a band closely associated with their Shipibo Indian background and normally dress in traditional costumes for their concerts. Here's a video of theirs. Fun stuff!

A video from Los Destellos, led by Enrique Delgado, who died in 1996 and is still regarded as a chicha guitar hero.
